<\/a><\/p>\n10.\u00a0 This may be director Liz Canner’s first feature length film, but it’s not her first documentary. Canner has a twenty-year career as a documentarian, centered around human rights.\u00a0 You’ve probably seen her work on PBS or cable, mostly as a producer.<\/p>\n
9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Canner first became involved with the FSD drug race through pornography: she took a job editing erotic videos for women to watch to gauge their arousal.\u00a0 Not bad work if you can get it, we guess.<\/p>\n
8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cOrgasm, Inc.\u201d has been screening in various film festivals, medical conferences, and human rights seminars since 2009, but only got a release in theaters last week, courtesy of First Run Features.<\/p>\n
7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The symptoms of female sexual dysfunction are: persistent, recurrent problems with sexual response or desire.\u00a0 Yep, that’s it.\u00a0 Canner couldn’t find a more specific definition, but she did find a lot of evidence that everybody trying to \u201ccure\u201d it doesn’t want one.<\/p>\n
6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One of the key problems is the word \u201corgasm\u201d has medical, endocrinological, psychological and neurological definitions.\u00a0 Doctors aren’t sure if orgasms from stimulating the g-spot are, medically speaking, orgasms, but psychologically speaking, they’re definitely orgasms.\u00a0 So, if you’re making a drug for women to orgasm…what kind of orgasm are you looking for?<\/p>\n
5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One of the biggest problems with the female orgasm is sex education: \u201cOrgasm, Inc.\u201d shows that women being unable to orgasm from vaginal intercourse is perfectly normal, but most women aren’t aware of that and think it’s a medical problem.\u00a0 That’s because \u201cvaginal intercourse\u201d was created by Freud, and might be a myth: the clitoris is the key source of orgasm, and it can extend into the walls of the vagina (thus creating the G-spot) and back to the anus.\u00a0 Then there’s the \u201cbreast orgasm\u201d; some women can orgasm just from their breasts, possibly due to hormones created by fondling them.<\/p>\n
4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The big problem, in terms of measuring orgasm medically, is that women don’t orgasm like men.\u00a0 In fact, it’s so different, even sixty years ago, the female orgasm wasn’t considered to actually exist by some doctors.\u00a0 This is a problem that keeps coming up in \u201cOrgasm, Inc.\u201d; after all, male orgasms are a lot more measurable.<\/p>\n
3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The most common type of orgasm is the clitoral orgasm.\u00a0 Which is kind of a problem for some of Canner’s subjects, as they’re not sure where, precisely, their clitoris is.<\/p>\n
2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Creepiest method Canner came across to solve this \u201cproblem\u201d: plastic surgery on the vagina.<\/p>\n
1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Canner’s biggest discovery: female sexual dysfunction may not even actually exist.\u00a0 The female orgasm isn’t well-understood, even now, mostly because nobody’s bothered to look into it.\u00a0 Even drugs that treat male sexual problems aren’t really worth it: Viagra can’t make you eat better, reverse the aging process, or get rid of all the stress in your life.\u00a0 People just have no sense of what’s medically normal…which makes sense, as Canner shows, sometimes doctors don’t know either.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
