Here\u2019s what you should know about colon cancer and why it\u2019s important to talk about it not just in March but every month.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs every March and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccalliance.org\/about\/awareness-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was dedicated by Bill Clinton in February 2000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to raise awareness of cancers in the rectum or colon. It had two purposes: to destigmatize talking about these cancers and to serve as a way to rally survivors, allies, and people living with colorectal cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People can struggle to talk to their doctor about their body when it comes to the colon and rectum; they\u2019re taught it\u2019s \u201cdirty\u201d or impolite to discuss. So, the goal is to raise awareness of colon cancer and its signs, as well as to encourage people to ask for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colon cancer awareness has become especially important as the demographics of colorectal cancer are changing. It\u2019s also the third leading cause of death by cancer for both men and women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths combined by gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roughly 50,000 Americans die from colorectal cancer or complications from it each year. The overall death rate has been declining due to better colorectal cancer screening, but among younger people, it\u2019s been rising. There are 1.5 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With about twice the number of cases, colon cancer is more common than rectal cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Are the Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond age, there are other factors to be aware of. Some are biological and others are related to lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory Bowel Disease\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other inflammatory bowel diseases can raise your risk of colorectal cancer. This is likely because inflammation increases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org\/what-is-ibd\/colorectal-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the turnover of cells in the colon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family History<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to other cancers, a close family member with a history of colorectal cancer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/colon-rectal-cancer\/causes-risks-prevention\/risk-factors.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases the chances of getting it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Usually, this is because of abnormal growths in the colon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking and Other Tobacco Use<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably heard from your doctor that if you use tobacco, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/want-bigger-and-quicker-erections-quitting-smoking-might-help\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s time to quit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tobacco use substantially increases your risk of all forms of cancer and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/health_effects\/tobacco_related_mortality\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a host of other diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol Use<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy alcohol consumption is also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/cancer-causes\/diet-physical-activity\/alcohol-use-and-cancer.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongly associated with higher cancer risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the occasional glass of wine with dinner is unlikely to meaningfully raise your odds, patterns such as binge drinking may be a risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body Weight<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being overweight or obese <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/obesity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases your risk for at least 13 kinds of cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including colorectal cancer. Precisely why is still unknown, and it\u2019s not clear if obesity itself is the cause or if it\u2019s a symptom of other risk factors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41416-018-0314-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sedentary Lifestyle<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separate from weight, a lifestyle with little exercise seems to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7700832\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase your chances of getting some types of cancers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as chronic diseases that can aggravate cancer. Again, it\u2019s an open question whether the activity itself or the benefits of that activity have the impact, but it\u2019s clear that regardless of your body type, regular light exercise can tip the odds in your favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diet that\u2019s low in fiber, fruits, and vegetables and high in fat, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ije\/article\/49\/1\/246\/5470096?login=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially processed meats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can raise your risk of colorectal cancer. In fact, quitting smoking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/stay-away-from-tobacco\/benefits-of-quitting-smoking-over-time.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shows benefits almost immediately<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Become Familiar With the Early Signs of Colorectal Cancer<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep an eye out for the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A change in your bowel movements that seems permanent, such as diarrhea or constipation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding from your rectum or seeing blood in your stool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pains that won\u2019t go away, including cramps or gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The feeling that you haven\u2019t fully emptied, no matter how much you go.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness or fatigue.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These aren\u2019t necessarily signs of colorectal cancer.
