What do the studies tell us, and what can people with diabetes do to manage their risk of colon cancer? Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Is There a Link Between Diabetes and Colorectal Cancer?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence is increasingly pointing towards a strong link between diabetes and colon cancer. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3938122\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 survey of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that both cohort studies, which involve people who share a common characteristic over a long period of time, and case control studies found that the risk of colon cancer was up to three times as high for people with diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the lifetime risk of getting colorectal cancer is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/colon-rectal-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.3% for men and 4% for women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s a considerable increase. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/care\/article\/38\/3\/495\/37562\/The-Risk-of-Colorectal-Cancer-in-Patients-With\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from around the same time found that obesity could also be a factor; a particular concern as the majority of people with diabetes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4887150\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are overweight or obese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other cohort studies have found that diabetes may set the stage for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7665813\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early-onset colon cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re guaranteed to get colon cancer if you\u2019re diabetic or that diabetes is a direct cause of colon cancer. Both are common diseases, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/basics\/type2.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in ten Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having diabetes. While colon cancer numbers have been steadily declining, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/colon-rectal-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">106,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aacrjournals.org\/cebp\/article\/15\/10\/1977\/260849\/Obesity-Diabetes-and-Risk-of-Prostate-Cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other risk factors for colon cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as smoking, family history, and inflammatory bowel disease. Still, considering the risk, many doctors take a \u201cbetter safe than sorry\u201d approach. But there are some clues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, there\u2019s the interplay between your insulin levels, your metabolism, and your body. For example, hyperinsulinemia, or too much insulin in your blood, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4720912\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closely connected to both obesity and cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to the point where some doctors may use insulin tests as part of a cancer diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since body weight is seen as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.org\/cancer\/cancer-causes\/diet-physical-activity\/body-weight-and-cancer-risk\/effects.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a risk factor for cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the connection may seem obvious. However, it\u2019s not clear whether obesity is a direct cause of cancer, a symptom of another condition, or an indirect source of stress on the body that aggravates other risk factors. There\u2019s a good chance that all of these factors play a role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, people with diabetes have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7855858\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a higher risk of liver, endometrial, bladder, and breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Again, it\u2019s not clear if this is due to the overall strain on the system from diabetes or whether there\u2019s a direct cause, and It doesn\u2019t apply to all cancers. Men with diabetes, for example, have a higher risk for high-grade prostate cancer but may have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aacrjournals.org\/cebp\/article\/15\/10\/1977\/260849\/Obesity-Diabetes-and-Risk-of-Prostate-Cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a significantly lower risk of low-grade prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is evidence of a possible deeper connection between diabetes and some forms of cancer. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5392343\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 follow-up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study on the topic notes that diabetes and cancer share some methods of harming the body, to the point where some drugs are tested both as cancer and diabetes-related treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7855858\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that they may share pathways (ways that a specific disease makes you sick).
