The two have much in common, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep26939\">researchers have concluded<\/a> that they may be related.<\/p>\n<h3>What Is the Relationship Between Prostatitis and IBS?<\/h3>\n<p>Prostatitis is a surprisingly common medical condition, even among young men. Despite this, doctors still have a hard time diagnosing or defining it. Bacteria cause about 5-10 percent of prostatitis cases. We don\u2019t yet understand how the remaining 90-95 percent of prostatitis cases develop.<\/p>\n<p>IBS is as common as prostatitis. It causes pain, inflammation, altered bowel movements, and general discomfort around the lower abdomen. The authors advise urologists to consider the strong association between IBS and prostatitis when diagnosing and treating patients.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the symptoms and triggers of the two disorders overlap.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Both are functional disorders; both produce symptoms, but doctors can\u2019t diagnose either through clear, well-defined measures.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The prevalence of the two disorders is similar.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">IBS patients are more likely to develop prostatitis.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Past physical and sexual abuse is a risk factor for both.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">They have comparable impacts on the quality of life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Prostatitis and IBS May Have Common Roots<\/h3>\n<p>Prostatitis and IBS both cause pain in internal organs.
