Blood tests might, indeed, be able to tell you if you\u2019re at risk for ED, but there\u2019s a bit of a catch. It\u2019s not really the ED these blood tests are looking for, and if you get a positive result, you\u2019ve got more important problems. Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h3>How Would a Blood Test for ED Work?<\/h3>\n<p>To explain how we can test your blood for ED risk, we need to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1993955\/\">endothelial dysfunction<\/a>, a form of non-obstructive coronary artery disease. With this disease, the large blood vessels on the heart constrict instead of expand, which is painful and a prelude to more serious heart problems.<\/p>\n<p>To determine whether you have this, you\u2019ll generally have, among other tests, a blood test looking at three data points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Eosinophil count (EC)<\/strong>: Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell. Generally you should have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/tests\/eosinophil-count-absolute\">about 500 per microliter<\/a>. Any more than that is a sign that your immune system is unusually active.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Mean platelet volume (MPV)<\/strong>: In the blood, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/platelet\">platelets<\/a> (also called thrombocytes) come from your bone marrow and help blood clot and heal wounds. The larger the platelet, the more reactive it is and another indicator of heart disease.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Platelet count (PC)<\/strong>: Similarly, the more platelets you have, the more of a sign it is that your body needs to heal more often.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26571319\/\">2015 study<\/a>, conducted on 230 men (130 with ED and 100 without), looked to see if these results could also predict ED. Sure enough, it found that elevated MPV and PC were associated with the problem and recommended further research as a possible marker.<\/p>\n<p>Another study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5675230\/\">conducted in 2017<\/a> using a small sample, found that an elevated EC is predictive of arteriogenic ED, where there\u2019s insufficient arterial blood supply to the penis.<\/p>\n<h3>How Would This Blood Test Predict ED?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/man-holding-his-hands-over-his-heart.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31728\" title=\"man holding his hands over his heart\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/man-holding-his-hands-over-his-heart.jpeg\" alt=\"man holding his hands over his heart\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/man-holding-his-hands-over-his-heart.jpeg 512w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/man-holding-his-hands-over-his-heart-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some types of ED are caused by blood vessels constricting, so blood can\u2019t get into the penis as effectively. Bring the studies, explain what\u2019s happening, and ask them to run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/complete-blood-count\/about\/pac-20384919\">a complete blood count test<\/a> (CBC), which will include the values given above.<\/p>\n<p>But keep in mind that right now, there\u2019s no formal blood test for ED, just conclusions we can draw based on the data from other tests.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, familiarize yourself with the early signs of heart disease:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Chest pain<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Pain, weakness, coldness or numbness in the extremities, jaw, neck, throat, and upper back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing any of those signs, talk to a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>The study also speaks to the importance of lifestyle changes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/stop-smoking\/\">Quitting smoking<\/a>, consuming less alcohol, getting more exercise, managing stress, and eating healthier have positive effects across the body, including your cardiovascular system.
