Is there a link between spinal cord injury and hair loss? Scientists are trying to find out.<\/p>\n<h3>Health Complications Following Spinal Cord Injury<\/h3>\n<p>Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a shock to the whole body. It usually happens in an accident, such as a car crash or sports injury. Depending on the type of injury, an SCI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aans.org\/en\/Patients\/Neurosurgical-Conditions-and-Treatments\/Spinal-Cord-Injury\">leaves a person<\/a> partially or completely paralyzed.<\/p>\n<p>Living with spinal cord injury means dealing with a range of health problems. Actor Christopher Reeve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2003\/11\/10\/the-reeve-effect\">talked openly<\/a> about dealing with pneumonia, infections, and ulcers.<\/p>\n<p>But why hair loss? Hair loss is a dermatological problem, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/3101697\">is common<\/a> with this disability. Scientists say the symptoms were consistent with \u201cpsychogenic telogen effluvium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under that difficult name hides a special type of diffuse hair loss with a psychological component. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/a_to_z\/telogen-effluvium-a-to-z\">Telogen effluvium<\/a> often happens after a sudden change or shock to the body.<\/p>\n<p>Every hair on our head and body goes through the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780323049092500047\">life cycle<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The growing phase (anagen)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The regressing phase (catagen)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The resting phase (telogen)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the cycle ends, the hair falls out. In a healthy person, 10 to 15 percent of hair is in the final, resting phase. For people with telogen effluvium, it\u2019s about 30 percent.<\/p>\n<h3>Possible Causes of Hair Loss After Spinal Cord Injury<\/h3>\n<p>Scientists still don\u2019t understand why people shed more hair after a spinal cord injury.
