It\u2019s found in the skins of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, mulberries, and even peanuts. If you\u2019ve ever read about antioxidants in red wine, the writer was probably referring to resveratrol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resveratrol is useful both in its pure form and when it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/np990266n\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">converted into other forms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by plants for various purposes. This is how resveratrol turns up in our diets, with some interesting effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How Much Resveratrol Can I Get From My Diet?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s some debate about whether eating plants provides us with meaningful amounts of resveratrol. All the studies we\u2019re looking at have either been done with animals or as \u201cbench\u201d tests \u2014 performed on cells in petri dishes. Nonetheless, what\u2019s emerged so far is intriguing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start with, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/nutrition-research-reviews\/article\/abs\/efficacy-of-resveratrol-in-male-urogenital-tract-dysfunctions-an-evaluation-of-preclinical-data\/7904C6788B854EDF2F13ECAE79CAB3FB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-clinical data on the compound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been promising from multiple angles, demonstrating effectiveness on not just ED, but also urinary tract infections, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate), prostatitis, and even continence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears from bench tests that the positive effects are due to resveratrol\u2019s ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the urogenital area. It\u2019s not a silver bullet, but it\u2019s worthy of further study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing more on ED, there are two studies in particular that stand out. The first looked at rats. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3949699\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes triples the odds of developing ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the study was conducted to see what resveratrol could do for diabetic rats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theory is that resveratrol acts on sirtuin1, or SIRT1, a sort of handyman enzyme that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biosignaling.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1478-811X-9-11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performs multiple functions in the body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The rats who received resveratrol <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23792339\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got their erectile function back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and also showed improvements in smooth muscle and other factors. That doesn\u2019t automatically translate to humans, of course, but it does suggest some intriguing questions and opens the door to more study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study, this time with mice, found that resveratrol <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/jsm.12993\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulates the production of hydrogen sulfide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hydrogen sulfide is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25933982\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally produced by the body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because it relaxes muscles to allow more blood flow in, it\u2019s been a known candidate for ED treatment for quite a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, this study found that hydrogen sulfide acted through an entirely different mechanism than the currently available ED drugs do. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/buy-viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/cialis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and similar medications are phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PDE5 inhibitors act on a specific enzyme that limits the breakdown of nitric oxide (NO), which creates better blood flow into the penis to facilitate an erection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that hydrogen sulfide can do the same thing using a different channel is exciting. It opens the door to alternative ED treatments for people who can\u2019t take the currently available ED meds, such as Viagra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, should you throw away your Viagra and start drinking a bottle of wine with dinner? So, have a glass of red wine, not a bottle, and don\u2019t drink alcohol at all if your doctor recommends you stop, or if you\u2019re concerned about your alcohol intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, there\u2019s no free lunch in biochemistry. When you change one thing, you change everything, and not necessarily for the better. There are substantial concerns that high amounts of resveratrol <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7139620\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may cause damage to cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and there may be toxicity concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, most of this research is looking at resveratrol as an anti-cancer medication at amounts much larger than what you could consume, no matter how much you enjoy the foods it\u2019s found in. So the question, at a practical level, becomes how we can use this research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Can I Use Resveratrol to Cure ED?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ED is a complex problem with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/is-erectile-dysfunction-just-part-of-getting-older\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple possible causes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s no harm in trying!
