But does perception match reality?<\/p>\n<p>That question is hard to answer. The most common form of hair loss is hereditary and more likely to affect men. The medical name is <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/androgenetic-alopecia\/\">androgenic alopecia<\/a>, and it\u2019s caused by too much testosterone.<\/p>\n<p>Your hair is made of keratin, KRT37 to be precise, and it\u2019s very sensitive to androgens such as testosterone. As androgen exposure on the scalp goes up, two things happen to follicles. First, their life cycle is sped up, so they grow faster and fall out more quickly. Secondly, testosterone shrinks the size of the follicle, creating thinner and more brittle hair.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, this wears out the follicle. While aging also contributes to hair loss, androgenic alopecia doesn\u2019t have a specific point where it sets in. So the question is, can something speed up the clock?<\/p>\n<h3>Factors In Hair Loss<\/h3>\n<p>There are a few other factors that can drive hair loss, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Stress<\/strong>: While you may not literally be tearing your hair out, stress has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/stress-symptoms\/art-20050987\">multiple health impacts<\/a> that can affect your body and have an indirect impact on hair loss.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Diet<\/strong>: Nutrient deficiency has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28243487\/\">found to be a factor<\/a> in hair loss, although it\u2019s more likely to be an issue if you don\u2019t have enough to eat, period. If your hair is thinning fast, worry about your health first. If you\u2019re experiencing other symptoms in addition to hair loss or find your hair is thinning much faster than it should, get checked out and make sure you don\u2019t have other medical issues first.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Treat your hair well<\/strong>.
