However, some people do not have interest in sex or romantic relationships. This article discusses this phenomenon, known as asexuality, and explores its relationship with sexual intimacy concerns like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/\">erectile dysfunction<\/a> (ED).<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">What Is Asexuality?<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">People who identify as asexual are typically not interested in having sex, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/327272#spectrums\">The Trevor Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asexuality.org\/?q=overview.html\">Around 1% of the U.S. adult population<\/a> identifies as asexual. People who identify as asexual have sex less often than their non-asexual peers, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10508-019-01485-0\">2019 study<\/a>. But despite being less sexually attracted to others, asexual people did not differ from non-asexual people when it came to being in a current intimate relationships presently (58.6% vs 61.4%, respectively).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But just because someone is asexual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/327272#how-do-you-know\">doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they are celibate or abstinent<\/a>. It also may not mean they don\u2019t want emotional or intimate relationships with others.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/327272#what-is-asexuality\">people who are asexual (also called \u201cace\u201d or \u201caces\u201d) can want to<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Fall in love<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Get aroused and orgasm<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Masturbate<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Have a partner and children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Within the asexual orientation, there are different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/327272#how-do-you-know\">subtypes<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Aromantic (aka \u201caros\u201d)<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Demisexual<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Graysexual or grayromantic (aka \u201cgray-A\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As the name suggests, someone who identifies as aromantic has little or no interest in romantic relationships. Demisexual individuals can have both sexual and romantic relationships, but they first need a close emotional connection with a person.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Finally, graysexual or grayromantic individuals will feel sexual attraction sometimes or occasionally want a sexual or romantic relationship but not to the extent that a non-asexual person does.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Older and Middle-Aged Men and Asexuality<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/475FBB86-0ADD-11EC-84E9-16BBE722B6A9\/AdobeStock_205127441_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Man sitting on a chair.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Anyone can identify as asexual. Young, old, male, female, etc. In fact, in studies on asexuality, more women than men identify as asexual. Similarly, older adults might be more likely to be asexual compared to younger adults.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As one example, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00224490409552235?casa_token=y8ZalpdEIG0AAAAA:qJq-RAEv0Tx4t6krCF15Z-VqZ_ecYQRXOSDEGyo5sv1MV3ydWR6fkNfsmQQxX-6d_i93g5uH_dWlZg\">2004 nationwide study<\/a> on asexuality, researchers found that older adults were more likely than younger adults to report being asexual.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This study was important because it identified several factors related to asexual orientation, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Gender<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Social class<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Education<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Race\/ethnicity<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Physical development<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Health<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Religiosity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Asexuality in older adult males may be linked to health issues that contribute to ED. More on that below, but first, what about young adult men who are asexual?<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Young Adults and Asexuality<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/475FBB86-0ADD-11EC-84E9-16BBE722B6A9\/AdobeStock_345979373_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Person holding a rainbow colored heart.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cA lot of people seem to think that asexual people do not want any form of a relationship with someone. While that may be true for some, I hope to find a romantic partner that I can share my life with.\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/amp\/7-young-people-discuss-their-ace-identities-and-what-people-get-wrong-about-asexuality\">Charlie King<\/a>, male college student who identifies as asexual.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As Charlie\u2019s quote shows, asexuality is not just something middle-aged and older adults identify with. This shouldn\u2019t be too surprising, as youth is a time for people to explore and learn more about their own sexual interests and preferences.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In fact, while 1% of adults identify as asexual in the United States, that number <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2020\/\">jumps to 10%<\/a> when among LGTBQ+ youth. The percentage could be even higher when taking into account the percentage of non-LGBTQ+ youth and young adults who also identify as asexual.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/2020\/10\/26\/research-brief-asexual-and-ace-spectrum-youth\/\">\u00a02020 study<\/a> conducted by the Trevor Project, asexual youth, similar to asexual adults, identified with different subtypes of asexuality, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Demisexual<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Polyamorous<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Graysexual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Asexual LGTBQ+ youth also experienced different health outcomes than their non-asexual peers. Asexual youth surveyed were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/2020\/10\/26\/research-brief-asexual-and-ace-spectrum-youth\/\">more likely to report<\/a> having generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder than their non-asexual peers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Both anxiety and depression are known to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/erectile-dysfunction\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355776\">risk factors for ED<\/a>, but it is not known how many youth in this study, if any, experienced ED.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">More on the Link Between Asexuality and Health<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0092794\">More recent research,<\/a> published in 2014, also cites health as a possible contributor to asexual orientation. The researchers compared men who hadn\u2019t had sex in the last 6 months (the asexual group) to men who had (the non-asexual group).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Men in the asexual group were more likely to have risk factors associated with moderate or severe ED, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Older age (65 years plus)<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Diabetes<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Hypertension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Am I Asexual, or Do I Have Erectile Dysfunction?<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/475FBB86-0ADD-11EC-84E9-16BBE722B6A9\/AdobeStock_223688747 (1)_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Person seeking help from a medical doctor.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It&#8217;s okay if you choose to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/20\/us\/asexuality-explainer-trnd\/index.html\">identify as asexual<\/a> and forgo romantic or sexual relationships if that\u2019s what makes you happy. There is overlap between asexuality and ED, namely a lack of sexual desire.
