The plaques most often form on the top of the penis, causing an upward curve. Named after French doctor Francois de la Peyronie, this diagnosis is commonly given to men with irregularly shaped penises. Penis shapes can include a bend or curve or might be abnormally narrow or short.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4893516\/\">Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/a>&nbsp;is not just about the look of the penis but also about its function and sensation. Men with this condition may experience&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/peyronies-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353468\">painful erections<\/a>. Instead, it typically stays the same or gets worse over time. In addition to these physical impacts, men also report anxiety or stress due to the appearance of their penises and its impact on their sex lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum Injection Therapy Work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collagenase&nbsp;<em>Clostridium histolyticum<\/em>&nbsp;is an enzyme secreted by the bacterium&nbsp;<em>Clostridium histolyticum.&nbsp;<\/em>CCH works by breaking down collagen, which is present in Peyronie&#8217;s plaques as well as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/dupuytrens-contracture\">Dupuytren&#8217;s contracture&nbsp;<\/a>of the hands. CCH is currently the most effective treatment for Peyronie\u2019s disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A full treatment course consists of four series of two CCH penile injections, for a total of eight shots. Another treatment option is penile traction therapy, where the penis is essentially stretched for 30 minutes to 1-1\/2 hours daily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Evidence Says Don\u2019t Lose Hope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/722E677E-DE71-11EB-AC9C-B7E171781159\/AdobeStock_109605508_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Open book.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, some men who underwent the first two injections of CCH as part of penile injection therapy did not see improvement in their condition. As a result, doctors didn\u2019t know if they should continue with the second round of CCH injections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new research, published in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsm.jsexmed.org\/article\/S1743-6095(21)00419-7\/fulltext\">Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/a>, suggests that men should not lose hope, even if the first two injections don\u2019t appear to be effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers looked at results for men who underwent all eight injections of CCH and had penile measurements available before the injections (called the baseline), after the first two sets of shots (four injections), and\/or after the complete series of eight injections. They then looked at the changes in penile curvature from the baseline to the end of treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some men did not see great improvement after the first set of shots but did see better improvement after the final round of injections.
