A genuine micropenis is extremely rare, with just 0.6% of men worldwide experiencing the condition. Small penis syndrome, on the other hand, is a manifestation of mental health concerns and is far more common. Small penis syndrome can cause erectile dysfunction (ED), even in the absence of a medical cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is It Real, or All In Your Head?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is your penis too small? If you answered yes to this question, you&#8217;re in good company. &nbsp;Estimates of numbers of men who feel that way are as high as 85%. But how many have a true micropenis (an actual physical diagnosis), and how many just believe their penis is too small (often a psychological issue)? [Spoiler alert: Your penis is probably well within the normal range.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s dive into the facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Micropenis: The Facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Micropenis is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17955-micropenis\">an extremely rare condition<\/a>. It&#8217;s estimated that 1.5 out of 10,000 male births in America will be diagnosed with a micropenis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A micropenis is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3890219\/\">fully functional and has all the correct structures<\/a>\u00a0but is shorter by more than 2.5 standard deviations from the mean, or roughly 7 cm (2-3\/4 inches) or less in adult men.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Micropenis is generally caused by larger concerns with a patient&#8217;s health, such as problems with hormone production or genetic disorders. A micropenis in the absence of these disorders is incredibly rare and unlikely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Micropenis is usually diagnosed in infancy and treated during early childhood with hormone treatments to stimulate normal penile growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While men can experience penile shortening for a number of reasons later in life, this isn&#8217;t the same as micropenis and has different treatments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/bg-ed\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"745\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/27122024-Generic-Viagra.png\" alt=\"Generic Viagra for erectile dysfunction\" class=\"wp-image-40406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/27122024-Generic-Viagra.png 745w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/27122024-Generic-Viagra-300x121.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Measure Your Penis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re curious, here&#8217;s the correct way to measure your penis:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While flaccid, press a ruler underneath your penis until it touches the pubic bone. Your scrotum should be under the ruler.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gently but firmly grip your penis underneath the head and stretch the shaft as far as it&#8217;ll go. Do not grab the foreskin and stretch it if you&#8217;re uncircumcised; this is both misleading and painful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note the length from tip to base and you have the SPL of your penis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long is the Average Penis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/7F45BD8A-DE72-11EB-81C0-37E271781159\/AdobeStock_122920509_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Measuring tape.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite what you might read on the internet or hear in locker rooms,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32666897\/\">the average penis is 5.1 to 5.5 inches long when erect<\/a>, measured by the stretched penis length (SPL) method. Widely reported numbers saying it&#8217;s longer tend to be exaggerations based on either flawed measuring methods or self-reported numbers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is true of pretty much any claims you&#8217;ve heard about penises. No one group of men tends to have larger or smaller penises, statistically speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Statistics are important here, as that&#8217;s how doctors generally diagnose concerns such as micropenis. Doctors use a statistical rule called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/68%E2%80%9395%E2%80%9399.7_rule\">the 68-95-99.7 rule<\/a>. This rule says that 68% of a given population falls within the average range, that 95% are within one standard deviation of the mean, and 99.7 are within two standard deviations of the mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A standard deviation (SD) is just how much variation there is in a data set, where the higher the SD, the rarer it is. If you had a penis that was 5.6 inches long when erect, it would be one standard deviation from the mean, for example. This is usually expressed as a bell curve, where the average is the middle and the more extreme cases get rarer the further out you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/7F45BD8A-DE72-11EB-81C0-37E271781159\/768px-Bellcurve.svg_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Bell curve.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors expect \u2014 and have generally found \u2014 that most penises are within two SD of the average mean. Penises outside two SD are incredibly rare, statistically speaking, and that&#8217;s borne out in field data. Remember, this applies to both longer and shorter penises. Men with very long penises are just as rare as men with very short ones, a good lesson to keep in mind when we discuss small penis syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practically speaking, this means the vast majority of men reading this do not, medically, have an abnormally small penis. The problem, of course, is that there&#8217;s a difference between medical reality and how men perceive their bodies. Penis size can be \u2014 and often is \u2014 a matter of perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which brings us to small penis syndrome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Small Penis Syndrome?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/7F45BD8A-DE72-11EB-81C0-37E271781159\/AdobeStock_427956479_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Holding multiple measuring devices.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small penis syndrome (SPS), sometimes classified with body dysmorphic disorders, is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bjui-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1464-410X.2007.06806.x\">the stubborn belief by the patient that their penis is unusually small<\/a>&nbsp;compared to other men&#8217;s penises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPS has a number of causes, ranging from the emotional to the medical. Some men believe their penis is unusually small because of how they present when flaccid, or they experience penile shortening due to weight gain, surgery, injury, or another medical issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More often than not, SDS is psychological. Some men experience erectile dysfunction (ED) that&#8217;s reflected in a belief their penis is small. It also may manifest as part of a broader mental health concern, such as anxiety or depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s difficult to convince SPS sufferers that they&#8217;re normal because you&#8217;re arguing against both their own self-perception and the wider social issues surrounding penis size. There may even be tangible changes to the penis, which make the conversation even more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Small Penis Syndrome Treated?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/7F45BD8A-DE72-11EB-81C0-37E271781159\/AdobeStock_71787600_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Man looking under his blanket.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPS has an number of treatment approaches, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While learning the facts alone won&#8217;t change body self-image, it helps everyone to learn the reality of their bodies. This is especially true when the exaggerations of pop culture are their only yardsticks. Some conversations with your doctor or a urologist can reassure you that your penis is perfectly normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Body Acceptance Work<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, as a culture we&#8217;re often not taught body acceptance, particularly around medical concerns that may change our bodies, or even the simple passage of time. Being taught that everything that happens to our bodies is a problem can wear on our health. Learning to accept your body can help alleviate SPS, among other problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lifestyle Changes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially in more general cases, or cases caused by ED, specific lifestyle changes can help with SPS. Eating better, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption can help patients feel better, build confidence, and have overall physical and mental health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental Health Approaches<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPS can be an expression of a number of emotional health concerns, ranging from body dysmorphia to simple aging. Mental health care can help address these concerns. This may include partner work, work with a sex therapist, or joining a support group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ED Treatment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Short-term and long-term ED approaches, such as using medication and making other changes, can help address one of the underpinnings of some cases of SPS.
