When you eat food, your body breaks that food down into its most basic components: proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Your body always prefers to use carbohydrates for energy, and its favorite is a sugar called glucose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that allows the cells in your body to make use of that glucose. Diabetes is a disease that results when either of two things happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) Your body doesn&#8217;t produce any insulin at all (type 1). This is a disease where your immune system accidentally destroys the insulin-making cells in your pancreas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) The cells in your body become resistant to insulin (type 2). This is usually the result of being overweight or obese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is the same either way: Your blood sugar starts going up. Over time, unchecked high blood sugar starts to damage your nerves, a condition called&nbsp;<strong>neuropathy<\/strong>. It also damages very small blood vessels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symptoms that neuropathy causes depend on what nerves are being damaged. They can range from burning pain, tingling, and numbness in the hands and feet all the way to the inability to get or maintain an erection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both types of diabetes can cause neuropathy and ED, but it\u2019s more common in type 2 diabetics because they can live longer without realizing that they have diabetes. Increased prolactin levels, also called hyperprolactinemia, can be caused by a number of different medications. They can also be caused by a&nbsp;<strong>prolactinoma<\/strong>, a usually benign (noncancerous) tumor, or growth, on the pituitary gland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, ED symptoms can also happen when you have abnormally high or low thyroid hormone levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like we mentioned earlier, if you\u2019re experiencing problems with erectile dysfunction \u2014 especially if you\u2019re under 40 \u2014 it\u2019s important you see a doctor as soon as possible. There\u2019s a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mskcc.org\/clinical-updates\/halt-ed-depression-spiral\">definite link<\/a>&nbsp;between conditions like depression and anxiety and erectile dysfunction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, the results of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8254833\/\">Massachusetts Male Aging Study<\/a>&nbsp;indicate that men aged 40 to 70 years who experience significant depressive symptoms are nearly&nbsp;<strong>twice<\/strong>&nbsp;as likely to report symptoms of erectile dysfunction as non-depressed men in the same age range.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is true whether or not they have other conditions we\u2019ve discussed that can potentially cause ED, like heart disease or diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, regardless of your age, if you\u2019re suffering from the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, the most important thing is that you make an appointment with your physician ASAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact is that the symptoms of\u00a0erectile dysfunction\u00a0aren\u2019t anything to knock aside.
