Man Up To Cancer helps by giving men tools to break through isolation and find support and offers a blueprint for men living with cancer to get the emotional support they need.<\/p>\n<h3>The Emotional Effects of Cancer<\/h3>\n<p>With any cancer diagnosis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/treatment\/treatments-and-side-effects\/physical-side-effects\/emotional-mood-changes.html\">emotional symptoms are common<\/a>, particularly anxiety, depression, and a broad range of negative emotions \u2014 from anger to fear \u2014 classed under the term \u201cdistress.\u201d Men, in particular, are more likely to experience these emotional symptoms and experience them more intensely than women. For example, an analysis in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study found that men who were diagnosed with any of the forms of cancer studied were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4150351\/\">more prone to depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is generally attributed to a few factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/jun05\/helping\">less likely to use mental health resources<\/a>, such as therapists or support groups, and building an emotional support system from scratch can be difficult when dealing with a cancer diagnosis and other life stressors.<\/li>\n<li>Men are generally expected to be \u201ctough\u201d and \u201cindependent,\u201d not needing or asking for help, so when something they can&#8217;t overcome on their own comes along, they can struggle.<\/li>\n<li>Some types of cancer, such as prostate cancer or testicular cancer, can directly threaten sexual functioning through erectile dysfunction, and in turn, some men&#8217;s masculine identity or sense of self, which can be difficult to talk about.<\/li>\n<li>Even in the absence of these factors, cancer can have intense emotional impact that can be difficult for others to understand. Feelings of isolation or that others \u201cjust don&#8217;t understand\u201d are common.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/health\/conditions-treatments\/info-2021\/covid-causes-therapist-shortage.html\">overall lack of mental health resources<\/a> can make it difficult to find support, even for men who are open to it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Building Better Emotional Health Models<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/4E46B28C-9B26-11EB-8C2E-A2B779D057E5\/AdobeStock_300407419_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Group sitting around in a circle having a discussion.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><br \/>\nThis is why groups like Man Up To Cancer can help with laying out an emotional framework and offering support.
