The disorder, pulmonary arterial hypertension, effects about 600 children each year and causes chest pain, fatigue and dizziness.\u00a0The disease doesn\u2019t have a cure, and causes high blood pressure because of narrow blood vessels.\u00a0 The disorder eventually leads to heart failure, typically within the first year.<\/p>\n
The standard treatment involves inhalation of nitric oxide, but is expensive and is administered with a cumbersome piece of equipment.\u00a0 It\u2019s difficult for many parents to use the treatment in their homes.\u00a0 Doctors believe Viagra would be more convenient with fewer side effects.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Several doctors have already used Viagra to help children with this medical problem and say kids can often walk farther and breathe easier while taking the medication.\u00a0 Researchers at Childhood Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic at Toronto\u2019s Hospital for Sick Children gave Viagra to 14 children dealing with pulmonary hypertension for a year.\u00a0 At\u00a0 the end of the year, all children were still alive and could walk more than 500 feet farther than before and their breathing was less labored.<\/p>\n

Doctors say using Viagra to treat a lung condition isn\u2019t far fetched, the drug helps men by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow.\u00a0 The same results are needed to help those suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension.<\/p>\n
