Shingles (herpes zoster) is caused by a virus called varicella zoster (VZV). This virus activates in the bodies of people who have had chickenpox before. If you are older than 25, chances are high you have had chickenpox as a child. Vaccine against this highly infectious disease was introduced in the United States only in 1995<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shingles shows up on your skin in the form of painful, fluid-filled blisters. It is easy to recognize<\/a> because the rash is visible only on one side of the body or face. You may also experience flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Triggers a Shingles Outbreak?<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve had chickenpox before, the varicella-zoster virus remains in your body, lying dormant in your nerve cells. For most people, it stays inactive for life. But in about one-third of cases, the virus can reactivate later, causing shingles.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctors don\u2019t fully understand why some people develop shingles while others never do. What\u2019s clear is that your risk increases as you age, with about half of all cases occurring after age 60. By age 70 and older, the likelihood of experiencing an outbreak rises even more.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
