The truth is, many hormones are involved in healthy erections (but thankfully, garlic isn&#8217;t one of them!). TRT has been the most common form of hormone therapy for ED, but research has found that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/sexual-health\/in-depth\/testosterone-therapy\/art-20045728\">risks<\/a> can be high for some men.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there are other hormonal treatments for low T\/ED. These include pituitary hormone replacement, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) supplementation, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS), bioidentical hormones, aromatase inhibitors, and combination therapies.<\/p>\n<p>Read on to learn about recent research on hormonal treatments for hypogonadism and ED.<\/p>\n<h3>Testosterone Replacement Therapy<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/985E6C54-CB9F-11EA-B7BB-74E8C4B26F36\/bigstock-Vial-Of-Testosterone-Cypionate-372770425_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Testosterone Cypionate vial.\" width=\"900\" height=\"507\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are two types of hypogonadism: primary and secondary. Both can cause erectile dysfunction. Primary hypogonadism is caused by testosterone deficiency, while secondary hypogonadism results from problems with the hypothalamus or pituitary hormones.<\/p>\n<p>For primary hypogonadism, the most common form of hormone therapy has been testosterone replacement. But depending on the reason for the ED, testosterone supplementation may not solve the problem. If a man\u2019s testosterone level is normal, for example, replacement likely <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28816715\/\">won\u2019t help<\/a> him attain or maintain erections.<\/p>\n<p>TRT in men with normal T has become controversial in recent years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6462962\/\">Researchers<\/a> are finding possible connections between TRT and prostate cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30953635\/\">cardiovascular events<\/a>, low sperm count, and infertility. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auanet.org\/guidelines\/testosterone-deficiency-guideline\">American Urological Association<\/a> now recommends that TRT be prescribed only for men who have symptoms of testosterone deficiency and whose testosterone levels are below 300 ng\/dL (nanograms per deciliter).<\/p>\n<p>However, even <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31408289\/\">men with normal T<\/a> can have symptoms of testosterone deficiency but not meet TRT guidelines. Other forms of hormone treatment might make sense for them.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Hormone Treatments for Hypogonadism and ED<\/h3>\n<p>Hormones play an essential role in the reproductive system. Testosterone is the most significant, but other hormones are necessary for normal sexual function. The following are examples of hormonal alternatives or adjuncts to TRT.<\/p>\n<h3>Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)<\/h3>\n<p>Though hCG is often called \u201cthe pregnancy hormone,\u201d hCG injections can also help with low T symptoms. It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23260550\/\">safer<\/a> than TRT for men who want to preserve their fertility, as testosterone therapy <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1977002\/\">can lead to azoospermia<\/a> (lack of ability to produce sperm). hCG works by stimulating the testicles to produce more testosterone. These hormones can include thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), antidiuretic hormone (ADH), growth hormone, cortisol, and prolactin.<\/p>\n<p>Medication in injection or pill form is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dartmouth-hitchcock.org\/endo\/pituitary_hormone_therapy.html\">usual treatment<\/a> for hormonal deficits.<\/p>\n<h3>Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19694928\/\">Clomiphene citrate<\/a> (Clomid) is the most-studied SERM sometimes prescribed for men whose ED is caused by hypogonadism. Clomid causes the pituitary gland to release the hormones needed for healthy sexual function. Clomid does not affect testosterone levels or fertility. Though it is not FDA-approved for use in men, it has been safely used off-label for this purpose <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30522888\/\">since the 1970s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bioidentical Hormones<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Bioidentical hormones are made from plant extracts and designed to be molecularly identical to the body&#8217;s natural hormones. They have been used for decades to treat many medical problems, including low T. Their use is off-label for this purpose, but they are considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smr.jsexmed.org\/article\/S2050-0521(17)30122-1\/pdf\">safe and effective alternative<\/a> to testosterone replacement.
