There are several traditional treatments for HSDD, such as reducing dosages of medications that are known to cause sexual side effects — but doctors are also exploring novel treatments such as prescription pills.<\/p>\n

Is The Answer in Flibanserin?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Flibanserin<\/a> was originally created as an antidepressant, but when clinical trials didn\u2019t show promising results. One side effect that was observed, however, was that some women reported more interest in sex and enhanced satisfaction during their sexual experiences.<\/p>\n

A new phase of clinical trials began, and the effects were explored. In fact, one trial showed a near double in the number of sexual experiences per month when women with HSDD were treated with flibanserin.<\/p>\n

Another particular set of trials was focused on women of all ages, with different backgrounds, all of whom had never had any depressive disorders. When these women also reported positive results, the conclusions were easier to make, as it appeared that these women were not experiencing higher sexual desire simply because their depression was being treated.<\/p>\n

Several other clinical trials were promising, and now the drug is being brought to market.<\/p>\n

Is It For Me?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, it\u2019s worth asking your doctor. The drug has shown mixed results, but everyone is different — and if it works for you, it works for you.<\/p>\n

Potential side effects to watch out for include dizziness, anxiety, nausea, fatigue, dry mouth, and insomnia. Not everyone experiences these effects, but in trials, they were more common in flibanserin users than in placebo recipients.<\/p>\n
