The virus has been detected in semen and in feces, but not in vaginal fluids. The risk of viral transmission during sex is currently undetermined.<\/p>\n<p>Many Americans are unsure of their level of risk in contracting the virus from their partner(s). Read ahead to learn about the challenges COVID-19 poses to sexual health and intimacy.<\/p>\n<h3>Here\u2019s What We Know<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2765654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study conducted in Shanqiu, China<\/a> tested the semen of 38 men who tested positive for COVID-19. Researchers found traces of the virus in six of the men\u2019s semen, which accounted for 15.8 percent of the sample. The samples were taken while the men were acutely infected or within the early recovery stages of acute infection. Though the study sample was small and only 15.8 percent demonstrated traces of COVID-19 within semen samples, the results suggest that COVID-19 may still be found in those recovering from infection.<\/p>\n<p>Study Limitations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Researchers did not investigate whether or not COVID-19 could be transmitted sexually to intimate partners.<\/li>\n<li>Study participants were not followed up with or re-tested further in their recovery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional research is needed to determine the length of time COVID-19 is detectable in semen and whether or not the virus can be transmitted through sexual activity.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertstert.org\/article\/S0015-0282(20)30384-8\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">similar study<\/a> was conducted in Wuhan, China with 34 males who had recovered from COVID-19. Semen samples were taken from the males approximately 31 days after their medical diagnosis of COVID-19. No traces of the virus were found in any of the samples taken. Though the sample size was small, results of the study suggest that COVID-19 may no longer be detectable in the semen of men who have fully recovered from the virus.<\/p>\n<h3>What Other Ways is COVID-19 Transmitted?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/6EEDA4BE-8B64-11EA-B3B0-C0CB4C4937F3\/bigstock-Coronavirus-Danger-And-Public--347359225_900x.jpg\" alt=\"COVID-19 microscopic view.\" width=\"900\" height=\"502\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/faq.html#How-COVID-19-Spreads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 is primarily spread<\/a> person-to-person through direct contact. The virus is quickly spreading via community spread in many areas of the country, especially those with high population density. Close contact is currently defined as being within 6 feet (or two arm lengths) of a person who has COVID-19 for a sustained period of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pathways of Spread:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/downloads\/2019-ncov-factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Droplets<\/a>.<\/strong> Respiratory droplets are spread when a person coughs, speaks, or sneezes. These droplets can be inhaled through the mouth or nose of those in the immediate vicinity.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/intimacy-sex-and-covid-19-2020041519550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saliva<\/a>.<\/strong> The virus spreads via saliva, so it is recommended that those who are currently sick or recovering from the virus avoid kissing intimate partners.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/downloads\/2019-ncov-factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Surfaces<\/a>.<\/strong> Research shows the virus can live on various surfaces for extended periods of time (e.g. plastic and metal). Touching surfaces covered in the virus, then touching your face, eyes, or mouth may result in transmission of the virus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Does This Mean for Sexual Health?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2765654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research is unclear<\/a> as to whether or not COVID-19 can be transmitted in seminal fluid. COVID-19 has also been detected in feces, but transmission risk via exposure to fecal matter is unknown. The virus has not yet been detected in vaginal fluid. Thus, it is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashasexualhealth.org\/sex-in-the-time-of-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommended for those engaging in sex<\/a> to practice safer sex methods and social distancing guidelines until sexual transmission risk is determined.<\/p>\n<h3>Recommendations for Staying Safe<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/6EEDA4BE-8B64-11EA-B3B0-C0CB4C4937F3\/bigstock-Colorful-Condom-Lots-Of-Rubbe-354642548_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Person holding a small foil package.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/>A recent study from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/axios-ipsos-coronavirus-week-9-contact-tracing-bd747eaa-8fa1-4822-89bc-4e214c44a44d.html?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosam&amp;stream=top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Series<\/a> revealed a majority of Americans surveyed were being less diligent in following quarantine and self-isolation guidelines. While the majority of those surveyed reported practicing social distancing, 32 percent also reported visiting family members or friends within the past week. It is critical for Americans to continue to practice social distancing, as well as quarantine and self-isolation when having suspected contact with someone positive for COVID-19 so as to prevent the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>If both partners are healthy and have not had direct contact with someone suspected of having COVID-19, it is likely that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/intimacy-sex-and-covid-19-2020041519550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physical intimacy,<\/a> such as hugging, kissing, and even sex, are safe. However, those who are pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic can still spread the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashasexualhealth.org\/sex-in-the-time-of-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">following tips<\/a> can help people to enjoy sex while preventing the spread of COVID-19:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Social distance when living apart.<\/strong> If you and your partner do not live in the same household, continue to practice social distancing, quarantine, and self-isolation guidelines. If you do see one another or have sex with someone else outside your household, limit interactions and number of partners.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep track of suspected contact.<\/strong> If your partner has come into direct contact with someone suspected of having COVID-19, they should quarantine for 14 days following exposure. Avoid direct contact with them during their quarantine period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Isolate when ill.<\/strong> If your partner is feeling unwell or has tested positive for COVID-19, they should practice self-isolation. If you live together, try to reduce interactions as much as possible. For instance, if space is available, use separate bedrooms, bathrooms, and eating spaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be cautious about physical intimacy.<\/strong> Do not engage in physical intimacy or sexual activity while one or both partners are feeling unwell, or if either partner has recently tested positive for COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use protection.<\/strong> Males can use condoms during sexual intercourse if they have been sick or have had suspected COVID-19 exposure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limit exposure to bodily fluids.<\/strong> It is unknown if COVID-19 can be transmitted via seminal fluids, but it can be transmitted via saliva and has also been detected in feces. Use barrier methods such as condoms and dental dams when engaging in sexual activity to reduce risk of exposure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wash your hands and your toys.<\/strong> You are always your safest sex partner, but it is still important to wash your hands with warm water and soap both before and after masturbation.
