For example, smart watches struggled as a market segment until their usefulness as an activity tracker were realized. Now, Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/smartwatch-the-product-we-thought-that-was-doomed-to-fail\/\">sells more watches than the entire Swiss segment<\/a>. Similarly, the rise of connected exercise equipment and apps, such as Peloton, have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/05\/06\/peloton-pton-reports-fiscal-q3-2020-earnings.html\">66% growth in sales<\/a> and record participation year over year.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason telehealth, as a treatment delivery option, has suddenly exploded in popularity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/hipaa\/for-professionals\/special-topics\/emergency-preparedness\/notification-enforcement-discretion-telehealth\/index.html\">a temporary relaxation by government authorities<\/a> of the the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. Many preferred patient videoconferencing platforms, such as Facebook Messenger and Zoom, don&#8217;t meet HIPAA requirements, meaning physicians can&#8217;t use them for certain activities.
