Many bodybuilders claim that Viagra helps them build up their muscles faster. However, there is little scientific \u00a0evidence to support those claims.<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite a paucity of scientific evidence to back up their claims, some bodybuilders are convinced that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) medications can significantly improve their performance.<\/p>\n

After all, they argue, these drugs, known collectively as PDE5 inhibitors, work by temporarily improving blood flow. Increased oxygen supports muscle development and function. So it adds up, right?<\/p>\n

Bodybuilding Trainer Disagrees<\/h3>\n

One prominent naysayer in the American bodybuilding community is Lebanese-born George Farah, a trainer who has won a number of bodybuilding medals for his own performances.<\/p>\n

Interviewed for an article posted at GenerationIron.com<\/a>, Farah dismisses Viagra as being too expensive, particularly when added to the list of must-have supplements that most bodybuilders use. He also laughingly suggests that Viagra\u2019s erection-friendly effects could produce some anatomical consequences that would be unwelcome in the gym setting.<\/p>\n

Nitric Oxide Supplements<\/h3>\n

Farah instead promotes the use of nitric oxide supplements, which help to improve blood flow but don\u2019t produce the same adverse side effects as Viagra or the other PDE5 inhibitors.<\/p>\n

Much of the buzz about Viagra\u2019s ability to boost athletic performance is based on a very narrowly focused study that looked at the drug\u2019s effects on athletes competing at extreme elevations.<\/p>\n

That study, published in the June 2006 issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology<\/em><\/a>, evaluated the exercise performance of 10 cyclists at both sea level and simulated altitudes of roughly 12,700 feet.<\/p>\n

What the Study Found<\/h3>\n

Under the protocol of this double-blind study, some of the athletes were given supplementary sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra), while others got a placebo. No discernible difference was observed in athletic performances at sea level. However, the cyclists given sildenafil significantly outperformed those who got the placebo in trials at extreme elevation.<\/p>\n

The study suggests that bodybuilders who routinely exercise at extreme elevations might conceivably benefit from taking Viagra (sildenafil), but it\u2019s unlikely to do them much good at normal elevations.<\/p>\n

A Counter-Argument<\/h3>\n

Countering the arguments of those who urge against the use of Viagra as an aid to bodybuilding, those who favor its use point to a study that appeared in the December 2013 issue of Clinical and Translational Science<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

For that study, male participants in the clinical trial were randomly divided into two groups of equal size. One group got 25 mg doses of sildenafil daily for a period of six days, while the other was given a placebo. Both before and after the six-day dosing period, study participants were evaluated in terms of muscular components and performance.<\/p>\n

Increased Muscle Protein<\/h3>\n

Researchers found that the men who received sildenafil had higher levels of muscle protein and experienced less muscle fatigue than those who got a placebo. These findings, they argue, support the theory that sildenafil can stimulate an increase in the synthesis of muscle protein.<\/p>\n

Given the very limited amount of scientific research on the effects of PDE5 inhibitors on athletic performance, it\u2019s far from certain which argument for or against their use by bodybuilders is most persuasive. Until further evidence shines additional light on this question, it\u2019s probably safer to avoid these drugs to improve athletic performance.<\/p>\n
