A nonprofit group wants the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require a new label on the prescription bottles of erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs that points to the link between ED and cardiovascular disease.<\/em><\/p>\n

Eating a healthy diet, preferably one high in plant-based foods, and exercising regularly are two important steps that men can take to preserve normal erectile function and promote overall health. A nonprofit group of doctors is petitioning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to bring that message to the labels required on prescription bottles of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction (ED) medications.<\/p>\n

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) filed a petition in early February 2020 asking the FDA to require ED drug labeling that would alert consumers to the link between ED and cardiovascular disease. They also want labels to emphasize the importance of both a plant-based diet and physical activity in the maintenance of overall cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n

An Early Warning Sign<\/h3>\n

Doctors have long-recognized that ED serves as an early warning sign of more serious health problems. The arteries that carry blood to the penis are much smaller in diameter than those that supply the heart and brain. But if penile arteries have become clogged enough to prevent normal erectile function, it\u2019s a preview of what\u2019s likely to happen to larger arteries unless remedial action is taken.<\/p>\n

The PCRM petition also lays out the message that its proposed ED medication labels should carry, according to PCRM.org<\/a>. \u00a0It reads as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cErectile dysfunction is caused by artery disease, a condition that this drug will not improve. Artery disease can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and early death. A plant-based diet, moderate exercise, stress management, and lack of smoking can, in combination, improve and often reverse artery disease.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

PCRM Cites Several Studies<\/h3>\n

In support of its request for these new labels, according to an article at PlantBasedNews.org<\/a>, the PCRM cites a number of studies that show how lifestyle modifications can help promote better cardiovascular health. One study showed that men who consumed the highest levels of the phytonutrients found in fruits lowered their ED risk by 14 percent compared to those with the lowest intake of these nutrients.<\/p>\n
