Researchers from Wuhan University\u2019s Zhongnan Hospital and Hubei Clinical Research Centre for Prenatal Diagnosis and Birth Health found that men with the virus could have significant effects on the male reproductive system. Researchers Recruit 81 Men<\/h3>\n

The Chinese researchers recruited 81 men with a median age of 38 who had been infected with COVID-19 and subsequently recovered. Ninety percent of the study\u2019s participants had experienced relatively mild symptoms of the viral infection.<\/p>\n

The goal of the study was to determine the ratio between blood levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) in men who\u2019d been infected with COVID-19. Luteinizing hormone is a product of the anterior pituitary gland and plays a key role in controlling the function of the testes in men and the ovaries in women.<\/p>\n

Disturbing Findings<\/h3>\n

Among the study\u2019s participants, the ratio between testosterone and LH was found to be an average of 0.74, roughly half normal levels. A low ratio, such as that found in study participants, is often interpreted as a sign of hypogonadism, which points to a testicle malfunction that could lead to lower production of testosterone.<\/p>\n
