The average price of Viagra in March was little changed from its February level, while its generic equivalent\u2019s average price edged further downward, continuing a trend that began in the middle of 2019.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The average price for Viagra remained relatively stable in March 2020, according to data from Secure Medical\u2019s monthly review of select prescription drug prices. And while the price of sildenafil citrate, Viagra\u2019s generic equivalent, saw no dramatic movement, it did decline a very modest 1.3 percent from February to March.<\/p>\n

Viagra\u2019s price inched 1 cent lower from a February average of $79.87 per 100 mg tablet to $79.86 in March. For its generic counterpart, the average price per 100 mg tablet fell 28 cents from $21.92 in February to $21.64 in March.<\/p>\n

Many Users Split Tablets<\/h3>\n

The recommended starting dose for both Viagra and sildenafil is 50 mg. However, because prices for 50 and 100 mg tablets of those drugs are identical, most men buy the higher-strength tablets and split them, thus getting two doses for the price of one.<\/p>\n

While the average price of Viagra is slightly higher than it was in mid-2019, the price of its generic equivalent is down very sharply. Viagra\u2019s average price in July 2019 was $79.28, about 0.07 percent lower than its March 2020 price of $79.86. By contrast, sildenafil\u2019s price dropped a whopping 35.5 percent from $33.56 in July 2019 to $21.64 in March 2020.<\/p>\n

More Generics on the Horizon<\/h3>\n

April 2020 will bring a change that could affect the prices of both brand-name Viagra and its existing generic competitors, which have thus far been relatively few in number. That month, Pfizer\u2019s final U.S. patents on Viagra will expire, opening the door to increase generic competition.<\/p>\n

In fact, Viagra\u2019s limited generic competition up until now has been the result of an unusual agreement struck between Pfizer and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. in December 2013. Challenging the validity of Pfizer\u2019s remaining patents on Viagra, Teva as early as 2010 had announced its intention to begin marketing a generic version of the drug.<\/p>\n

What the Agreement Covered<\/h3>\n

Not surprisingly, Pfizer took Teva to court in an attempt to block the latter\u2019s challenge to Pfizer\u2019s patents. After a couple of years of litigation, Pfizer reached an agreement with Teva that would allow the Israeli-based generic giant to begin selling a generic version of Viagra as of December 11, 2017. That same agreement recognized the validity of Pfizer\u2019s remaining U.S. \u00a0Viagra patents and set their expiration date at April 2020.<\/p>\n

With that upcoming expiration, additional generic competition for Viagra — and its existing generic competitors — will undoubtedly begin. This has already exerted some downward price pressure on existing generic alternatives to Viagra, as can be seen in the decline in their average prices from mid-2017 to March 2020.<\/p>\n

Lower Prices Likely<\/h3>\n

Some have speculated that Pfizer has kept its prices for brand-name Viagra relatively stable to slightly higher in order to squeeze the maximum profits out of the brand before generic competition increases.
