In fact, popular TV doctor Mehmet Oz, M.D., a highly regarded cardiothoracic surgeon, suggests that sex might very well be the antidote to the inevitable boredom of self-quarantine.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with TMZ<\/a>, Oz said that nothing cuts the tension of self-sequestration \u201clike a little sexual healing.\u201d After all, there\u2019s only so many Netflix series you can binge-watch and self-improvement projects you can pursue.<\/p>\n

COVID-19 and Its Symptoms<\/h3>\n

The novel coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 is believed to have originated in the Chinese province of Hubei, or more specifically in the province\u2019s capital city of Wuhan, a city of nearly 9 million people.<\/p>\n

The primary target of COVID-19 is the respiratory system. Infections with the virus have led to illnesses ranging from relatively mild cold-like infections to severe respiratory infections leading to death. Particularly susceptible to more severe virus-related illness are those who are elderly or who suffer from preexisting conditions such as heart disease and chronic respiratory illnesses.<\/p>\n

Symptoms tend to appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. The most common symptoms are fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath. Other symptoms experienced by some COVID-19 patients include a sudden loss of smell and\/or taste and digestive issues, such as a loss of appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting.<\/p>\n

Does the Virus Spread Through Sex?<\/h3>\n

This novel coronavirus is too new to have been studied extensively. So it is not yet clear whether COVID-19 can be spread through semen or vaginal secretions, according to VeryWellHealth.com<\/a>. However, that question is probably moot since it\u2019s inevitable that sexual activity also will bring you into close contact with your partner\u2019s respiratory secretions.<\/p>\n

Sexual activity during the current quarantine is clearly least perilous for partners who are living under the same roof and are exposed to one another\u2019s respiratory secretions during the normal course of life.<\/p>\n

While the absence of COVID-19 symptoms is not proof-positive that an individual is uninfected with the virus, it\u2019s nevertheless a positive sign. It\u2019s to be hoped that no one would engage in sexual activity with a partner who is showing typical symptoms of the virus.<\/p>\n

TheGuardian.com<\/a> interviewed Julia Marcus, M.D., an infectious disease epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School, about the advisability of sex between housemates. \u201cIf you live with a regular sexual partner and you don\u2019t have any symptoms, or likely exposure,\u201d she said, \u201csex might actually be a really great way to have fun, stay connected, and relieve anxiety during this potentially stressful time.\u201d<\/p>\n

No Sex Partner at Home?<\/h3>\n

The advice for those who don\u2019t enjoy the convenience of an intimate partner at home is to exercise extreme caution and perhaps forgo partnered sex until the worst of the pandemic has passed.<\/p>\n

For those growing frustrated with the sexual isolation imposed by self-quarantine, Carlos Diaz-Rodriguez, a professor at\u00a0George Washington University\u2019s Milken Institute School of Public Health, offers some suggestions. He was also interviewed by TheGuardian.com.<\/p>\n

Looking for ways to work off some of that mounting sexual tension? Diaz-Rodriguez, a public health scientist, says \u201cother forms of expressing eroticism, such as sexting, video-calls, reading erotica, and masturbation will continue to be options.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the hundreds of thousands of men who are suffering from the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, this period of quarantine offers an excellent opportunity to make some changes in your lifestyle. After all, excess weight, an unhealthy diet, smoking, and a lack of exercise are all factors that increase your risk of ED.<\/p>\n
