Pre-eclampsia is in the top five causes of maternal death, affecting approximately 5 to 8 percent of pregnancies in the world.<\/figcaption><\/figure> A new human study is underway that will involve 120 women carrying babies who are far below normal growth guidelines. The study will be to determine whether or not Viagra can be an effective form of growth-boosting drug.<\/p>\n

The study follows promising results from experiments done in pregnant mice, where the drug boosted levels of blood available to the fetus by relaxing artery walls. But as of yet, no human trials have been conducted. That\u2019s about to change, however.<\/p>\n

Aussie\u2019s Recruit Women for a New Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

This new study is being conducted in Australia and New Zealand, and it\u2019s being conducted by Dr. Kate Groom, who\u2019s leading the research at University of Auckland.<\/p>\n

Though it will take several years — possibly until 2017 — for concrete findings to be reported and acted on, the current study is an important first step. After these initial trials are conducted, larger experiments may be done, depending on the promise of the initial findings.<\/p>\n

What The Treatment Targets<\/strong>
\nSome women suffer from a condition called pre-eclampsia, which sometimes causes maternal vasoconstriction: a situation where the arteries feeding the placeries are constricted and therefore unable to deliver adequate nutrition to the baby. But Viagra allows these arteries to relax and expand, which increases the amount of blood that flows to the fetus.<\/p>\n

If Viagra is found to help with vasoconstriction caused by pre-eclampsia, the news to expecting mothers would be hopeful, as a large number of stillborn infants are casualties of this particular pregnancy disorder each year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
