According to a recent news report, not everyone agrees. Vincent Friel, a 48-year-old Scottish businessman, says his involvement in a fatal auto mishap was precipitated by his doctor\u2019s prescription of a popular high blood pressure drug known as Tildiem. Friel claimed the doctor knew he was on Viagra and thus should not have prescribed the drug.<\/p>\n

Scotsman Sued His Doctor<\/h3>\n

A Scottish court jailed Friel for three years after finding him responsible for the death of 68-year-old pedestrian Charlotte Collins and the injury of her 69-year-old relative. For his part, Friel claimed that a combination of Viagra, Tildiem (diltiazem is its active ingredient), and an unnamed headache drug caused him to pass out behind the wheel of his vehicle, leading to the accident. Blaming his general practitioner, Friel sought to recover damages from the physician.<\/p>\n

The courts were not persuaded, however, rejecting Friel\u2019s claim for damages and finding him guilty of causing death and injury by driving dangerously.<\/p>\n

Such a Scenario Unlikely<\/h3>\n

Despite Friel\u2019s claims that the combination of Viagra and Tildiem, a calcium channel blocker, had caused him to temporarily lose consciousness, scientific studies suggest that that scenario is unlikely.<\/p>\n

In a study published in the January 2001 issue of the American Journal of Hypertension<\/em><\/a>, researchers at the University of Southern California found that sildenafil, Viagra\u2019s active ingredient, was safe and well-tolerated in men who were also taking antihypertensive medications.<\/p>\n

Drugs Appear Compatible<\/h3>\n

The safety of Viagra was tested in 3,975 men, 1,094 of whom were taking one or more antihypertensive medications. Represented in the study were virtually all classes of high blood pressure drugs, including diuretics, beta-blockers, alpha-1 blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers.<\/p>\n

In another study, published in a 2002 issue of the International Journal of Impotence Research<\/em><\/a>, researchers looked into the possibility of adverse interaction between sildenafil and dihydropyridines. The latter drugs are widely used in calcium channel blockers prescribed to lower high blood pressure. They failed to find any such interaction.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Mix with Nitrates<\/h3>\n

Although rarely used exclusively for the treatment of high blood pressure, nitrate-based drugs should never be used in combination with Viagra or any other oral ED drug for that matter. Prescribed primarily for the treatment of angina pectoris, nitrates sharply lower blood pressure, as do the ED drugs. Taken together, they could cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.<\/p>\n
