Researchers have found that the treatment of prostate enlargement with GreenLight laser is a safe and effective alternative to transurethral resection of the gland, which sometimes has an adverse effect on erectile function.<\/em><\/p>\n

Erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are two distinctly different medical problems. However, some forms of treatment of the latter, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, can interfere, at least temporarily, with erectile function and even lead to ED. This small gland is located between the bladder and the penis.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, however, recent research has found that photoselective vaporization of the prostate, or PVP, did nothing to adversely impact erectile function in men with no symptoms of ED before the procedure. Even more promising was the finding that this laser treatment for BPH appeared to improve erectile function in those with prior symptoms of ED.<\/p>\n

Surgery Can Cause ED<\/h3>\n

In contrast, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical treatment to address the urinary problems caused by BPH, has been found to cause ED in up to 14 percent of men undergoing the procedure.<\/p>\n

The most recent findings about the advantages of laser treatment over the surgical resection of the prostate through the urethra come from two Chinese studies, both published in the second half of 2019.<\/p>\n

Fewer Complications<\/h3>\n

In the first of the two studies, published in BMJ Open<\/em><\/a> in August 2019, researchers compared the safety and efficacy of GreenLight laser treatment of BPH with transurethral surgery. They found that the laser treatment was equivalent to TURP as measured by most criteria and led to fewer complications. They also determined that laser treatment had more safety benefits than the surgical approach to BPH treatment.<\/p>\n

For the second study, published in the October 2019 issue of Urology<\/em><\/a>, researchers tracked a group of 265 sexually active patients who underwent treatment with a 160-watt GreenLight laser for up to 36 months. Patients were divided into two groups — those with scores under 19 on the International Index of Erectile Function and those with scores of 19 or higher. IIEF scores under 19 are indicative of mild to severe ED.<\/p>\n

Effects on Erectile Function<\/h3>\n

In men with no significant symptoms of impotence prior to laser treatment, erectile function continued to be unhindered for up to 36 months after the procedure. However, researchers noted that men with some degree of ED prior to treatment showed definite signs of improved erectile function.<\/p>\n

In an earlier study published in a 2004 issue of the World Journal of Urology<\/em><\/a>, 14 percent of patients who underwent surgical resection of the prostate developed symptoms of ED postsurgically.<\/p>\n
