Prices for all but one of the brand-name ED medications and their generic equivalents were lower in early 2020 than they were in mid-2019. Viagra\u2019s price was up but by less than 1 percent. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Erectile dysfunction drug users had plenty to celebrate with the arrival of the New Year. Bucking the overall trend of prescription drug prices, the average prices for all ED medications but one were down in January 2020, compared with where they stood in July 2019.<\/p>\n

The sole exception was Viagra, the granddaddy of the oral ED medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. And its price increase was hardly a big one. The average price for Pfizer\u2019s little blue pill climbed a very modest 0.8 percent from $79.28 per 100 mg tablet in July 2019 to $79.93 in January 2020.<\/p>\n

All Other Prices Were Down<\/h3>\n

The average prices for all other ED drugs, both brand-name and generic, were down. Price decreases ranged from a low of 2.2 percent to a high of 56 percent. While price drops for generic ED drugs were the biggest, percentage-wise, brand-name Levitra and Staxyn were 14 and 15.6 percent lower, respectively.<\/p>\n

Viagra\u2019s price hike of less than 1 percent may reflect Pfizer\u2019s determination to squeeze as much profit out of its iconic ED drug as possible before its final U.S. patents on the drug expire in April 2020, which will be here before we know it.<\/p>\n

Generic Competition to Grow<\/h3>\n

And the expected arrival of still more generic competition for Viagra could very well account for the 54.3 percent decline in the average price for 100 mg sildenafil from $50.05 in July 2019 to $22.85 in January 2020.<\/p>\n

Among other ED drugs, prices for Cialis as-needed and tadalafil as-needed, which together are the second biggest sellers after Viagra\/sildenafil, were down 4.2 and 52.1 percent, respectively. The average price for 20 mg Cialis as-needed went from $78.06 in July 2019 to $74.75 in January. The average price for 20 mg tadalafil as-needed dropped from $37.60 in July 2019 to $18.01 in January.<\/p>\n

Cialis, Tadalafil Stand Apart<\/h3>\n

Cialis and tadalafil are available in both as-needed and daily formulations, the only real difference being the strength of their respective doses. The recommended starting dose for Cialis as-needed and tadalafil as-needed is 10 mg, while the starting dose for their daily counterparts is 2.5 mg.<\/p>\n

The average price for a 5 mg tablet of Cialis daily declined 16.4 percent from $16.46 in July 2019 to $13.76 in January. The price for a similar-size dose of tadalafil daily dropped 45.1 percent from $7.61 in July 2019 to $4.18 in January.<\/p>\n

Levitra\/Vardenafil Prices Drop<\/h3>\n

Levitra\u2019s average price fell 14 percent from $62.98 per 20 mg tablet in July 2019 to $54.13 in January. Prices for 20 mg of its generic alternative, vardenafil, plummeted a whopping 56 percent from $48.88 in July 2019 to $21.15 in January.<\/p>\n

All of the foregoing brand-name ED drugs, as noted, face generic competition, which explains in part their relative weakness in recent months. However, prices were also down for Staxyn and Stendra, neither of which yet has a generic equivalent.<\/p>\n

Staxyn, Stendra Prices Fall<\/h3>\n

The average price for a 10 mg orosoluble (dissolves in the mouth) tablet of Staxyn dropped 15.6 percent from $41.44 in July 2019 to $34.96 in January. And Stendra\u2019s average price declined by 2.2 percent from $70.60 in July 2019 to $69.02 in January.<\/p>\n

The direction of ED drug prices for the remainder of 2020 is uncertain. However, significant additional price relief seems unlikely given the extent to which these prices have already fallen.<\/p>\n
