The phrase implies toughing out whatever the situation is, without complaint.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Throughout history, men have been expected to be powerful, not just physically, but sexually too. Masculine, sexually-capable men were <a href=\"https:\/\/digpodcast.org\/2019\/08\/18\/impotence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">afforded more benefits in society<\/a>. Impotent men, on the other hand, were prohibited from marrying or had marriages revoked, and were not allowed to buy property.<\/p>\n<p>This article explores the harms that the stereotype of masculinity can perpetuate and why sexual functioning should be separated from the concept of masculinity. Namely, so that people with sexual dysfunctions, like erectile dysfunction (ED), encounter less stigma and get professional, medical help.<\/p>\n<h3>The Mask of Masculinity<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/A495B3DA-13FB-11EA-88B9-88AC5B8E5F5C\/bigstock-Man-In-Black-Suit-Drinking-Bee-301669273_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Man holding a large mug of beer.\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though all men are expected to be masculine, masculinity isn\u2019t guaranteed. Typically, it must be earned or proven. Men face pressure to prove their masculinity, though they can express it in positive and negative ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pi\/about\/newsletter\/2016\/04\/man-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Potentially negative ways<\/a> men prove their masculinity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Engaging in violence, like getting involved in fights<\/li>\n<li>Risk-taking in social situation, like binge drinking<\/li>\n<li>Hooking up with a lot of women<\/li>\n<li>Repressing all emotions except for anger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Traditional stereotypes of masculinity, and their negative expressions like the ones listed above, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatherly.com\/love-money\/apa-traditional-masculinity-hurts-boys-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harmful to men and boys<\/a>. In fact, the American Psychological Association considers masculinity at least partially responsible for men being more likely to die by suicide and live overall shorter lives than women.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Hope on the Horizon<\/h3>\n<p>Conversations about the harms of masculinity are not new, but research into what might constitute positive masculinity and male norms is. Researchers conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Ryon_Mcdermott\/publication\/324712383_In_Search_of_Positive_Masculine_Role_Norms_Testing_the_Positive_Psychology_Positive_Masculinity_Paradigm\/links\/5b197e14aca272021cef75a6\/In-Search-of-Positive-Masculine-Role-Norms-Testing-the-Positive-Psychology-Positive-Masculinity-Paradigm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> where they asked participants to review 79 potential positive masculine attributes and rate the degree that they are associated with men and women. Below are a few of the qualities that participants identified with being masculine.<\/p>\n<p>Positive ways men can express their masculinity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being a leader<\/li>\n<li>Being hardworking<\/li>\n<li>Serving one\u2019s country or community<\/li>\n<li>Being confident<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fortunately, it looks like men\u2019s impressions of masculinity are changing. Researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18221291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conducted a multi-country study<\/a> exploring what it means to be masculine among men with and without erectile dysfunction (ED). To their surprise, they did not find differences in what men determined were masculine ideals based on their sexual functioning.
