What the Surgery Involves<\/h3>\n

This form of surgery has been likened by some to a cardiac bypass, but in this case, the goal of the procedure is improved blood flow not to the heart but to the penis. In most cases, penile revascularization surgery involves a bypass from the inferior epigastric artery to the dorsal penile artery.<\/p>\n

Working with the help of an operating microscope, the surgeon first makes an incision just above the penis. From within the incised area, the dorsal penile artery is exposed and isolated.<\/p>\n

A second incision is then made in the lower abdomen to expose and isolate the inferior epigastric artery, which is one of several blood vessels that supply blood to the rectus abdominus muscle. Diverting this artery from its normal purpose can be done safely because it is not essential to ensure the muscle\u2019s normal function.<\/p>\n

Now using the guidance of the operating microscope, the surgeon connects the inferior epigastric artery to the dorsal penis artery. With this new connection, the penis now receives robust blood flow that was previously compromised by insufficient blood flow to and within the dorsal penile artery.<\/p>\n

Finding the Ideal Candidate<\/h3>\n
