Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) may be concerned about their role in their partner\u2019s low sex drive. However, there are many reasons for women middle aged and older to experience low sex drive that have nothing to do with their partner\u2019s ED.<\/p>\n<p>Read below to learn more about the causes of low sex drive in women and how both partners can work to treat or prevent the problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Potential Causes of Low Sex Drive<\/h3>\n<p>Women over the age of 60 are often dealing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/30\/well\/live\/menopause-sex-decline-partner-husband-wife.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aftermath of menopause<\/a>. Hormonal changes that accompany menopause may include vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex, and lower sex drive. These hormonal side effects may cause women to refrain from sex, but are not the only factors to consider when one is dealing with a loss of libido.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/30\/well\/live\/menopause-sex-decline-partner-husband-wife.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">series of surveys<\/a> with 24,000 women aged 50 to 74 revealed a variety of reasons for a decline in sexual activity. The surveys also revealed the vast majority of participants were not discussing their problems with libido with their medical providers. Women cited the following reasons for a decline in libido and sexual activity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The loss of a partner<\/li>\n<li>Life stress<\/li>\n<li>Busy schedules<\/li>\n<li>Their own or their partner\u2019s physical health problems<\/li>\n<li>Mental health or addiction problems for self or for their partner<\/li>\n<li>Loss of interest<\/li>\n<li>Menopause-related symptoms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.studyfinds.org\/more-than-menopause-partners-sexual-dysfunction-behind-low-libido-for-many-older-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A recent study involving focus groups<\/a> and interviews with older women found five key themes related to low libido. The five themes were as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Postmenopausal symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Partner\u2019s erectile dysfunction<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue or bodily pain<\/li>\n<li>Life stressors<\/li>\n<li>Negative body image<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having a healthy sexual partner and being in good health are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/insight-therapy\/201911\/telling-the-story-numbers-cant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">key factors in maintaining a healthy sex life<\/a> and sustaining libido as women age.<\/p>\n<h3>Potential Solutions<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/A41B2E58-13FB-11EA-88B9-88AC5B8E5F5C\/bigstock-Happy-Senior-Couple-Is-Walking-337051471_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Happy older couple walking outside on a pathway.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/>Reasons for the decline in sex drive or sexual activity may vary for each woman, but there are several solutions that are effective for multiple causes. Women may want to explore the following to improve or maintain their sex drive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2019\/05\/09\/721751600\/lubrication-and-lots-of-communication-navigating-a-new-sexual-life-after-menopau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reframing the definition of satisfying sex<\/a>:<\/strong> A satisfying sexual experience does not always have to result in the completion of intercourse. Couples can reframe what they define as satisfying sexual activity in order to maintain sexual intimacy and decrease pressure related to performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/healthy-sex-partner-communication#health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Improving partner communication<\/a>:<\/strong> It is recommended that sexually active couples of all ages communicate about sex, including, but not limited to sexual health, expectations, likes and dislikes, and frequency of sexual intercourse.
