Oral erectile dysfunction drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors will continue to dominate the worldwide ED medication market for the foreseeable future. With patents on brand-name ED drugs expiring, however, overall revenues will decline.<\/em><\/p>\n

The prospects for the erectile dysfunction drug market over the next few years remain bright although the overall value of the market is expected to shrink in the wake of patent expirations on most brand-name ED medications.<\/p>\n

In its analysis of the market\u2019s outlook between now and 2026, Transparency Market Research<\/a> predicts the global market for ED drugs will shrink at an average compound annual rate of 3.2 percent between now and 2026. TMR estimated worldwide revenues in the market were $4.35 billion in 2016 but will decline to roughly $2.87 billion by 2026.<\/p>\n

Generic Sales Will Dominate<\/h3>\n

While the overall unit sales of ED drugs will increase, according to TMR, the revenue generated by those sales will decline as more and more of the drugs sold are generics, lower-priced versions of high-price branded drugs.<\/p>\n

The ED drug market will continue to be dominated by the oral ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors, including such brand names as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, and their generic equivalents. However, in the growing transition to the lower-priced options, generic versions are expected to be the biggest sellers.<\/p>\n

U.S. Remains Biggest Market<\/h3>\n

The United States is expected to continue as the largest single market for ED medications. A growing demand for these drugs is based on the ever-growing population of older Americans, who are more likely to be affected by ED. TMR estimates that U.S. sales accounted for nearly 95 percent of the North American market.<\/p>\n

Among the other ED drugs already available for sale in the United States and elsewhere, alprostadil is perhaps the best known. It is used in both penile injection therapy and as a suppository introduced into the penis through the urethral opening known as the meatus.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s on the Horizon?<\/h3>\n

On the horizon are a couple of other potential new ED medications. The first of these is Vitaros, which is a topical application of alprostadil-based cream that induces erection shortly after application. The Food and Drug Administration in early 2018 rejected Vitaros in one proposed treatment modality, but the drug\u2019s patent owners are making changes in the hope of eventually getting FDA approval.<\/p>\n

The second new approach to treating ED is with a drug known as apomorphine (brand name of Uprima), which works on brain chemistry rather than blood flow to overcome ED symptoms. The drug quickly dissolves under the tongue, releasing its active ingredient to stimulate the areas of the brain responsible for sexual arousal. This drug could be especially useful for men whose ED symptoms are psychological in origin.<\/p>\n

Although neither Vitaros nor Uprima has yet been approved for sale in the United States, they are available in a handful of other markets worldwide.<\/p>\n
