Publix had the lowest price for Valtrex in October 2019, but eDrugstore\u2019s price was only slightly higher. And the online supplier\u2019s price for valacyclovir was lower than any other prescription drug retailer, conventional or online.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Recurrent outbreaks of cold sores and genital herpes can be a real nuisance, but Valtrex and its generic equivalent, valacyclovir, can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of these episodes.<\/p>\n

Neither Valtrex nor valacyclovir is a cure for these infections, which are caused by the herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, but the antiviral medications can make life a bit more pleasant for those who are infected by the viruses.<\/p>\n

Viruses Are Incurable<\/h3>\n

Once infected by one of these viruses, your body must live with the consequences for the rest of your life. Both herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 alternate between active phases, during which outbreaks occur, and dormant phases when the viruses take shelter in nerve cells and are temporarily inactive.<\/p>\n

Valtrex and valacyclovir are also effective against shingles and chickenpox, both of which are caused by the herpes zoster virus, also known as varicella-zoster. If you had chickenpox as a child, the virus responsible goes dormant in your nerve cells and may re-emerge as an attack of shingles when you\u2019re older. Shingles attacks are most often seen in adults 50 and older.<\/p>\n

Prices Vary Significantly<\/h3>\n

Both Valtrex and valacyclovir are sold in 500-milligram tablets. Prices can vary significantly, so it pays to comparison-shop to find the best deal. Based on data from the October 2019 Secure Medical monthly review of prescription drug prices, the average price of 500-milligram Valtrex was $18.87. The average price for the same-size dose of valacyclovir was $10.32 in October.<\/p>\n

The Secure Medical monthly review survey prices from 18 prescription drug retailers — 15 conventional retailers that operate brick-and-mortar stores and three online prescription drug services.<\/p>\n

Publix Had Lowest Valtrex Price<\/h3>\n

Among conventional retailers, the lowest price for Valtrex in October was found at Publix, a regional supermarket chain operating in the southeastern United States. The price at Publix was $15.67, more than $2.30 cheaper than the next lowest price of $17.98 at Walmart. The next lowest price was $19.06 at Costco.<\/p>\n

Among the three online suppliers in the Secure Medical review, only eDrugstore.com carries Valtrex. Its price of $16.04 for a 500-milligram tablet of the drug was only 37 cents more expensive than the price at Publix.<\/p>\n

Valacyclovir Cheapest at eDrugstore<\/h3>\n

When comparing prices for valacyclovir, the generic equivalent of Valtrex, the lowest price among all 18 prescription drug retailers was $2.96, available from eDrugstore. The next-lowest price was $3.38, available at Publix. The next lowest price for valacyclovir was $8.04, available at both CVS and Target. (CVS owns and operates the pharmacy departments in Target stores.)<\/p>\n

While eDrugstore had the lowest price for valacyclovir and the second-lowest price for Valtrex. Its prices include not just the medications themselves but a handful of added-value services as well. You can see the prices for Valtrex and Valacyclovir in the following chart.<\/p>\n
