Acyclovir is a powerful antiviral medication that is prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks of genital herpes, cold sores, chickenpox, and shingles. Also sold under the brand names of Sitavig and Zovirax, acyclovir helps to relieve the discomfort of these recurrent outbreaks by inhibiting the ability of the herpes viruses to multiply within the body.<\/p>\n

This antiviral agent is effective against infections caused by herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, as well as the closely related herpes zoster virus, which causes chickenpox in young people and resurfaces in adults as shingles.<\/p>\n

No Cure Has Yet Been Found<\/h3>\n

Medical science has not yet found a way to flush the herpes viruses from the body, so the best treatment for outbreaks is from antiviral medications such as acyclovir and valacyclovir (Valtrex).<\/p>\n

These herpes family viruses take up residence in nerve cells and alternate between active phases, manifested by cold sores, genital herpes lesions, or shingles, and dormant phases when no symptoms are present. Based in Tempe, Arizona, eDrugstore is an online prescription drug service that\u2019s been in business since the late 1990s.<\/p>\n

Walmart Charged $5.23<\/h3>\n

The next lowest price for acyclovir was $5.23 at Walmart, the nationwide chain of superstores, all of which feature full-service pharmacy departments. A little more than a dollar more expensive was the $6.26 price for acyclovir at CVS and Target (CVS owns and operates the pharmacy departments in Target stores.)<\/p>\n

The next lowest price — $6.34 — was found at Publix, a supermarket chain that operates in the southeastern United States. Just 11 cents higher was the $6.45 price at both Walgreens and Rite Aid. You can compare prices using the following chart.<\/p>\n
