Virginia\u2019s Department of Health warns that a male enhancement supplement has caused serious health problems in nearly a dozen men who tried it. Many of these products are sold in places like convenience stores and flea markets.<\/em><\/p>\n

So-called male enhancement supplements are widely available both online and over-the-counter in convenience stores, but taking them can be hazardous to your health.<\/p>\n

A product called V8<\/a> is just the latest in a long line of such supplements that have proven to be a health threat. The Virginia Department of Health in September 2019 reported that it was actively investigating reports of severe hypoglycemia in nearly a dozen men who\u2019d taken the dietary supplement.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Hypoglycemia?<\/h3>\n

Hypoglycemia is a condition characterized by abnormally low blood glucose levels. Glucose is the body\u2019s primary energy source, so early signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia include anxiety, fatigue, irregular heart rhythm, shakiness, pale skin, sweating, irritability, and a tingling sensation around the mouth.<\/p>\n

For some of those unlucky enough to have tried the product in Virginia, V8 caused symptoms severe enough to require hospitalization. According to an article posted at WTVR.com<\/a>, the state\u2019s Department of Health had received 11 reports of hypoglycemia-related illness tied to the use of V8 as of mid-September.<\/p>\n

The WTVR report also indicated that preliminary laboratory analysis of V8 had detected the presence of compounds that could potentially lead to severe bouts of hypoglycemia.<\/p>\n

Oversight Is Challenging<\/h3>\n

The rapid proliferation of male enhancement supplements makes it virtually impossible for state or national health agencies to stay on top of all such products.
