What comes to your mind when someone mentions the word \u201ctestosterone\u201d? You probably picture a muscular, tough guy like Arnold Schwarzenegger. A man, in any case.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

We all know testosterone as a symbol of masculinity. What most of us don’t realize, is that the same hormone can help improve sexual desire in\u2026women.<\/p>\n

Two new drugs for women’s low libido<\/h3>\n

A\u00a0Dutch company called Emotional Brain has been working on two new drugs for female sexual interest\/arousal disorder (FSIAD), commonly known as low desire. Their innovative approach takes into account women\u2019s individual needs.<\/p>\n

Both drugs will have testosterone as an active ingredient. Lybrido will also contain sildenafil (yes, the same chemical found in male Viagra). Lybridos will have buspirone (a serotonin receptor antagonist) as an added ingredient.<\/p>\n

Testosterone boosts women\u2019s sexuality too<\/h3>\n

What\u2019s the role of the \u201cmale hormone\u201d testosterone in women\u2019s sexuality? What we need to understand first is that testosterone is not only found in males. Women\u2019s bodies also produce it, in lower amounts. The average levels\u00a0<\/a>of the hormone in men are 7-8 times higher than in women.<\/p>\n

A \u201cLancet\u201d-published review\u00a0<\/a>of 46 studies proved that testosterone significantly increased sexual function, including frequency and pleasure in women. It also helped reduce distress related to intimacy.<\/p>\n

Despite very promising results, one concern remains. Long-term side-effects of testosterone therapy on women are not known. New drugs, developed by Emotional Brain will offer a workaround of sorts. Women will need to take them on demand, a few hours before planned intercourse. This will eliminate the need for daily testosterone therapy.<\/p>\n

Results of Lybrido and Lybridos tests so far<\/h3>\n

First tests of the new drugs have brought positive results, although the studied group of women was quite small. Fifty-six participants \u2013 both pre- and postmenopausal \u2013 with diagnosed low desire participated in a series of tests.<\/p>\n

Every woman did a 4-week course of pills<\/a> (placebo, testosterone + sildenafil, and testosterone + buspirone). During the study, a series of tests and questionnaires was conducted to check if the participants\u2019 desire and sexual satisfaction changed.<\/p>\n

The results confirmed the initial theory of researchers. Women with low sensitivity to sexual stimuli reacted better<\/a> to the testosterone and sildenafil combo. \u00a0Women with more sexual inhibition showed better results<\/a> with the testosterone plus buspirone combination. The results so far have not been clinically significant.<\/p>\n

It is also not clear how doctors are supposed to diagnose potential patients into the right categories. Emotional Brain has announced\u00a0<\/a>the choice between Lybrido and Lybridos will be based on women\u2019s genetic markers. First studies on how this new approach to diagnostics could look like have been published<\/a> recently.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s desire is more complex<\/h3>\n

What do these results tell us about the nature of women\u2019s desire? It looks like female sexual dysfunction is much more difficult to treat with medication. There may never be a \u201cfemale Viagra\u201d because female sexual response is much more than internal hydraulics.<\/p>\n
