Former National Football League players with a history of head trauma report a higher incidence of low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

As if pro football players didn\u2019t already have enough to worry about, it now appears that the head trauma widely associated with the sport also could significantly increase their risk of developing erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n

In a large-scale retrospective study of concussion and its side effects, researchers at two Harvard University-based institutions looked at health data from more than 3,400 former professional football players.<\/p>\n

What Harvard Researchers Found<\/h3>\n

Investigators from Harvard Medical School and the university\u2019s T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that former National Football League players who\u2019d reported head trauma had a higher incidence of ED. NFL players with a history of concussive-type symptoms after head trauma also reported low testosterone levels.<\/p>\n

These findings are only one aspect of the broad research undertaken as part of Harvard\u2019s Football Players Health Study<\/a>. Other topics of study include overall health and wellness, brain function, pain and mobility, and sleep.<\/p>\n

23% Suffer from ED<\/h3>\n

Among the study\u2019s 3,409 subjects who\u2019d experienced concussive-type symptoms, 18 percent suffered from abnormally low testosterone levels. Twenty-three percent said they were experiencing ED. And 10 percent of all study participants reported that they suffered from both low testosterone and ED.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Medscape Medical News<\/a>, senior researcher Andrea L. Roberts said that the study\u2019s findings should prompt clinicians treating head trauma to ask their patients about low testosterone and symptoms of impotence.<\/p>\n

Damage Is Incident-Dependent<\/h3>\n

Not surprisingly, the researchers found that the extent of damage to male hormone levels and sexual function appeared to be incident-dependent. The greater and more numerous the incidence of head trauma was, the greater its impact.<\/p>\n

According to an article posted at CNBC.com<\/a>, former NFL players who reported the most head trauma and concussion symptoms had nearly twice the risk of ED as those who reported the fewest such injuries and symptoms.<\/p>\n

Among study participants who reported indicators of low testosterone, roughly 40 percent said they were taking medications to increase T-levels. About half of those with symptoms of ED said they were taking drugs to treat their symptoms of male impotence.<\/p>\n
