Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease that targets both men and women, can lead to erectile dysfunction in men infected with the STD.<\/p>\n

Caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium, the STD is often asymptomatic in both men and women, making it difficult to detect. In men, the chlamydia infection can eventually lead to chronic prostatitis, a painful condition that can make it difficult or even impossible for a man to get and keep an erection.<\/p>\n

In women, chlamydia, if untreated, can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). And PID increases a woman\u2019s chance of developing ectopic pregnancy (outside the uterus), infertility, and chronic pelvic pain.<\/p>\n

And both men and women who have chlamydia face a higher risk of contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which can lead to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) and increased vulnerability to opportunistic infections.<\/p>\n

A Very Common Infection<\/h3>\n

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>, chlamydia is one of the most prevalent STDs in the United States. In fact, over the past quarter-century, it has been the most widely reported STD in this country. The CDC estimates that 2.6 million Americans become infected with chlamydia every year.<\/p>\n

As previously noted, chlamydia in men frequently leads to prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland. Once the chlamydia bacterium enters the male (or female) genital tract, it can quickly spread to nearby organs. In men, the infection first targets the urethra, the narrow passageway that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the prostate gland. As the infection spreads along the urethra, it eventually reaches the prostate, leading to prostatitis.<\/p>\n

Once it has become infected with the chlamydia bacterium, the prostate becomes inflamed and somewhat swollen, which in turn impedes blood flow to the penis. And without robust blood flow to the penis, erection becomes difficult, if not impossible.<\/p>\n

What to Look For<\/h3>\n

Although chlamydia infection is difficult to detect, particularly in its earliest stages, it does eventually lead to certain symptoms. Unfortunately, these symptoms may sometimes be dismissed as evidence of other problems. It\u2019s essential that you consult your doctor if you experience one or more of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n
