In the long-running battle against hair loss, one of the newer weapons is scalp micropigmentation, a cosmetic procedure that was introduced in Britain but has caught on here in the United States.<\/p>\n

For those unfamiliar with the SMP process, it involves \u201creplicating the appearance of shaven hair, by introducing thousands of tiny pigment deposits into the epidermis of the scalp,\u201d according to Team Micro<\/a>. The latter is an international micropigmentation marketing company.<\/p>\n

A Noninvasive Solution<\/h3>\n

In an era when many men, including some with no real hair-loss issues, favor the shaved-head look, SMP offers men a noninvasive solution that gives them the appearance of hair where no real hair actually remains.<\/p>\n

Although it might be most popular with men who can use it to simulate the shaved-head look, SMP is also used by women and men whose hair loss is only partial. For them, this tattooing-like process is used to blur the contrast between the hair they still have and patches of bare scalp where hair has been lost.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Just an Illusion<\/h3>\n

It should be stressed here that SMP offers only the illusion of hair follicles. There is no real stubble on the head, and anyone subjecting an SMP patient to close scrutiny will soon realize that there\u2019s no longer any hair there.<\/p>\n

This altered form of testosterone gradually miniaturizes hair follicles to the point that they can no longer support hair growth. Fortunately, finasteride has been shown to reduce DHT levels by up to 60 percent. In clinical trials, finasteride stopped hair loss in 86 percent of study participants and triggered substantial new hair growth in 65 percent of those in the study.<\/p>\n

Minoxidil Is Another Option<\/h3>\n

For men who fail to get the results they want from finasteride, minoxidil (Rogaine) is a topical solution that also has been shown to slow or even halt hair loss and promote some degree of hair regrowth.<\/p>\n

To hold on to new hair grown with the help of either finasteride or minoxidil, these drugs must be continued on a daily basis. Once they are stopped, any newly grown hair will soon disappear.<\/p>\n
