Here are some of the stories that caught our attention.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">March 2019 was a busy news month on the erectile dysfunction front. The headlines ranged from an energy drink and an \u201call-natural\u201d honey tainted with sildenafil citrate (Viagra\u2019s active ingredient) to fresh claims that porn addiction may lead to ED in otherwise healthy young men. Here\u2019s a quick review of the month\u2019s ED highlights.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\"><strong>An \u201cenhanced\u201d energy drink:<\/strong> Government authorities in the landlocked south-central African country of Zambia ordered the manufacturer of Power Natural High Energy Drink SX to pull its product from the market. The product\u2019s troubles began in earnest in December 2018 when a customer in Uganda complained that the energy drink left him sweating profusely as he attempted to tamp down a raging erection that lasted for six hours. The drug regulatory agencies in both Uganda and Zambia reported that testing had revealed that the drink contained significant amounts of sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra. On the basis of these reports, the Zambian government in March ordered the product banned.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Honey with an unlisted ingredient:<\/strong> The manufacturer of Leopard Miracle Honey, advertised as \u201can instant source of energy and enhancement of male vitality,\u201d in March pulled its product from the U.S. market after a little prodding from the Food and Drug Administration. A few months earlier, the FDA had issued a product alert advising consumers not to purchase or use the honey, which it said contained sildenafil as an unlisted ingredient. Although the honey\u2019s label made no mention of sildenafil, it did list tongkat ali and ginseng, both herbal remedies long used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Because the label gave no indication that sildenafil was present in the product, it could have conceivably been used by men who were taking nitrate-based drugs, which are totally incompatible with sildenafil and all other PDE5 inhibitors. Both medications lower blood pressure and, taken together, could cause a life-threatening decline in blood pressure.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\"><strong>A new approach to female sexual dysfunction:<\/strong>\u00a0 Urologist Harin Padma-Nathan, M.D., newly appointed as chief medical officer of Manna Molecular Science, announced he\u2019s working on a cannabis-based gel to treat female sexual dysfunction. While multiple treatment options are available for male sexual dysfunction, little has been offered to women with sexual problems. Padma-Nathan was involved in the clinical trials that led to the eventual FDA approval of Viagra and Cialis. Manna Molecular Science is a leading cannabis biotech company.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Porn and ED:<\/strong> An article posted at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2019\/mar\/11\/young-men-porn-induced-erectile-dysfunction\">TheGuardian.com<\/a> called attention to the sharp increase in ED among younger men over the last couple of decades. The Reward Foundation, a Scottish-based nonprofit devoted to a study of the impact of online pornography, says the rate of ED among men under 40 today ranges from 14 to 35 percent. This is a sharp jump from a rate of 2 to 3 percent back in 2002. One of the primary culprits in this dramatic change, says the foundation, has been the easy access in recent years to hard-core pornography on the internet.
