<\/a>Borelli was diagnosed with Mucha-Habermann, a rare skin disorder.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis disease is so rare that most dermatologists don\u2019t see it in their entire practice,\u201d Dr. Doris Day, clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University Medical, who does not treat Borrelli, told ABC News. \u00a0\u201dIt\u2019s something that we read about but don\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to WebMD<\/a>, the disorder typically affects children. In most cases, children outgrow the condition. For Borelli, the symptoms started in eighth grade. The condition cleared up only to reappear his senior year.<\/p>\n \u201cOne day I woke up in the eighth grade and I had red lesions all over my body so I went to the doctors,\u201d he told ABC News<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cIt was the first or second case he\u2019s seen in his 40 year practice.\u201d<\/p>\n An interesting treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n Borelli takes medication and also spends eight minutes a day in a tanning bed to help keep the lesions at bay.<\/p>\n \u201cMy dad went with me the first couple of times to the tanning salon because I was a bit nervous,\u201d Borelli told ABC News.<\/p>\n Despite battling this rare condition, Borelli hasn\u2019t let it affect his athletic ability. He\u2019s one of the school\u2019s top scorers, averaging 20 points a game. He\u2019s just two points away from hitting 1,000 total points.<\/p>\n Borelli says his condition helped his outlook on life as he works to stay positive on and off the court.<\/p>\n \u201cIf anything it\u2019s probably helped,\u201d Borrelli said.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s people out there worse off than I am so I\u2019m real lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A New Jersey basketball player is battling a rare skin disease.
