Golfer Charlie Beljan says he has a secret weapon for upcoming tournaments: snacks. The golfer fought through panic attacks in November to the win his first PGA title. Beljan says this year he\u2019ll be prepared.<\/p>\n

In November, Beljan was golfing when he started battling chest pains.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was having a heart attack,\u201d he told ABC News<\/a>, describing how he played 18 holes through anxiety symptoms so severe he thought he might pass out. \u201cI told the caddy, I said, \u2018I\u2019m not leaving here until I\u2019m getting carted off from the middle of the fairway or somewhere.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Beljan was taken to the emergency room, where doctors said the rookie suffered a panic attack. Aside from playing in high-stress tournaments, Beljan became a father just seven weeks before and hadn\u2019t eaten in 24 hours when the attack hit.<\/p>\n

Doctors say eating right will curb attacks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beljan had a lot going on in November, but doctors say not eating for long periods of time can contribute to the severity of a panic attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no question there\u2019s a relationship between eating and mood,\u201d said Dr. Jeffrey Janata, division chief of psychology at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland. \u201cEating or failing to eat\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0going to cause anxiety or panic, but it can be a contributor in the sense that if we don\u2019t eat on a regular basis and we\u2019re hungry, it may increase our risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

The higher the stress level the higher the risk of anxiety, Janta said.<\/p>\n

Beljan improves his game<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beljan says he\u2019s learned his lesson. The next time he hit the green, he pulled out a banana on the second hole to make sure the problem didn\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n
