Ringworm isn\u2019t a worm at all but a very common fungus. It\u2019s in the gym locker room, your child\u2019s clothing, dirt in your garden, on your little kitten from the shelter, it\u2019s everywhere. Ringworm can keep you up at night and will spread easily to other people. This fungal infection is easily treatable but will take some time to go away and leave you itch free.<\/p>\n

What It Looks Like<\/h3>\n

Ringworm is classified by red crusty spots that are smaller than a dime. These spots will be outlined with a raised circle generally and itch like crazy. Ringworm or athlete\u2019s foot can look like red skin that has cracked between your toes. It is important to keep the sites clean and covered as much as you can, especially in areas that are easily passed to other people or animals.<\/p>\n

Where It Comes From<\/h3>\n

Ringworm is all over and isn\u2019t really avoidable. Many people develop immunity to the\u00a0fungus and never catch ringworm. Those of us who do not have the immunity can and probably will catch it time and time again. Be especially careful when working with small children in a daycare or school setting<\/a>. Kids commonly get ringworm and pass it on to other children. Make sure they all wash their hands and use hand sanitizer before and after play time. Also, if you work at a vet, shelter or rescue it is very important you wash your hands and clothing before mingling with the outside world of other animals. Ringworm is very common in kittens and puppies<\/a>. Older animals develop immunity to it and can not catch it but can still transfer it to you if they have been housed with an animal with ringworm.<\/p>\n

How To Get Rid Of It<\/h3>\n

Getting rid of it just isn\u2019t fun at all and can take some time. You must wash and sanitize everything you\u2019ve come in contact with that could be infected with ringworm spores. Make sure to wash your clothing and bedding in hot water. You would hate to catch it again after recovering.<\/p>\n

To treat ringworm on your own you can use several different household items to do the trick. Creams or sprays containing clotrimazole, miconazole, or terbinafine can be purchased over the counter, and are often effective in getting rid of ringworm.\u00a0 The off brand works just fine. Make sure not to touch or scratch the areas. Use the medication as directed, and if you don’t experience relief after several days, contact your doctor. There are more powerful prescription medications that can fight ringworm too.<\/p>\n
