While many of us hate the sound of our alarm clock in the morning, many of us take a good night sleep for granted.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever known someone with narcolepsy, you know they can fall asleep on the spot.\u00a0 Narcoleptics don\u2019t have a mental illness or battle too much stress, it\u2019s a nervous system disorder caused by a lack of a certain hormone in the brain.\u00a0 While narcoleptics often feel sleepy every three to four hours, they are also plagued with weight problems.\u00a0 A new study may explain why.<\/p>\n
A report holds answers<\/strong> \nOrexins, the hormone that narcoleptics don\u2019t have, are rather unique in that they allow one to eat more and lose more at the same time, explained Devanjan Sikder of the Sanford-Burnham Research Institute. “It is a couch potato’s dream.”<\/p>\n
Fat comes in one of two types: white or brown. White fat stores calories while brown fat burns them. \u201cIt seems a deficiency of the neuropeptide hormone orexin, an ingredient that encourages hunger and wakefulness, may leave them with a lack of energy-burning brown fat,\u201d a report in Cell Metabolism <\/em>said.<\/p>\n
What it all means<\/strong> \nResearchers believe this new information will lead to orexin therapy.\u00a0 They hope to give the hormone to those dealing with narcolepsy and see how it affects their weight gain.<\/p>\n
