It\u2019s one of the reasons so many people stay away from the dentist: the drill.\u00a0 Many patients say the pain and noise of the tool used to dig out cavities is the main reason they skip appointments, or avoid the dentist all together unless they absolutely have to.<\/p>\n
Now researchers have come up with a new way to fill a cavity, that doesn’t include a drill.<\/p>\n
How cavities form?<\/strong> A variety of things can cause tooth decay, including eating acidic foods and inadequate brushing.\u00a0 Acid reflux<\/a> can also cause tooth decay.<\/p>\n How does the new way to treat cavities work?<\/strong> Now when a dentist spots the early signs of tooth decay a new gel can be applied to the tooth.\u00a0 The fluid seeps into the small pores caused by acid and attracts calcium to the tooth, helping it regenerate and offering a pain free trip to the dentist.<\/p>\n How soon will it be at your dentist\u2019s office?<\/strong> “The results of our tests so far are extremely promising,” said Professor Paul Brunton, who is overseeing the patient testing at the University of Leeds Dental Institute. “If these results can be repeated on a larger patient group, then I have no doubt whatsoever that in two to three years time this technique will be available for dentists to use in their daily practice.”<\/p>\n What’s the cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n The cost of this new treatment is still in the works.\u00a0 For more information on how to save on health care, check out 9 Ways to Save Money on Health Care<\/a>. \nTooth decay begins when acid produced by bacteria in plaque dissolves the mineral in the teeth, causing microscopic holes to form. As the decay process progresses these small pores increase in size and number. Eventually the damaged tooth may have to be drilled and filled to prevent toothache, or even removed.<\/p>\n
\n“This may sound too good to be true, but we are essentially helping acid-damaged teeth to regenerate themselves. It is a totally natural non-surgical repair process and is entirely pain-free too,” said Professor Jennifer Kirkham, from the University of Leeds Dental Institute, who has led development of the new technique.<\/p>\n
\nThe gel has advanced from lab tests to a small test on actual patients showing signs of tooth decay.\u00a0 The\u00a0 results showed tooth decay was reversed.<\/p>\n
