\"AMore \u201cold\u201d men than we might think are still getting it on in the bedroom, according to a new study. It turns out that nearly a third of the men, aged 75 to 95, said they had sexual activity with their female partner in the last year. About 2,800 men took part in the survey, and just under half said sex was \u201cat least somewhat important\u201d to them.<\/p>\n

It only seems to reason that the \u201cyounger\u201d men in the survey reported the most sex (for the purposes of the study, intercourse was not required, only sexual activity). A total of 40 percent of men who were 75-79 said they had sex within the last year. However, even 11 percent of those aged 90-95 revealed that they were sexually active with a partner over the prior year.<\/p>\n

A high percentage of the older men who admitted to having sex said they would like more of it \u2013 43 percent to be exact. All of these numbers led the study authors to conclude that the sex lives of older people are very much unaccounted for due to a lack of similar studies. The new study was performed by the Western Australian Centre for Health and Ageing, and the findings appear in this week\u2019s issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.<\/p>\n

\"SexuallyThe social\/governmental ramifications of senior sex are many, and the overall health of seniors may benefit if they are having more\/better sex. But that latter statement is only conjecture at this time. Although it is known that sex is generally associated with better physical and mental health in younger people, it is unknown, for instance, how much testosterone therapy and other types of sexual assistance could benefit seniors who wish they could have more sex.<\/p>\n

One similar study was carried out in the U.S. and reported in 2007 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The results showed that just over half of the people surveyed, who were aged 65-74, had recent sexual activity. For 74-to-85-year-olds, that number was 26 percent.<\/p>\n

\"ADr. Stacy Tessler Lindau, an associate professor at the University of Chicago, was the lead author of the U.S. study. She told BusinessWeek that \u201c\u2026 if we fail to recognize older adults as having sexual lives, then we fail to engage them on the topic, reinforce positive sexual experiences or help them address sexual problems when they arise.”<\/p>\n

The medical community now agrees that people are having sex later in life, and this has been made possible by a number of factors \u2013 not the least of which are erectile dysfunction<\/a> (ED) medications such as Viagra<\/a>, Cialis<\/a> and Levitra<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some of the factors that allow men to have sex well into their lifetimes have nothing to do with medications, however. Doctors tell men who want to remain sexually active as they age that they should get sufficient physical activity, eat a healthy and nutritious diet, and stop smoking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
