Men who closely monitor their blood pressure and take steps to keep it within normal parameters have a significantly lower incidence of erectile dysfunction, according to a study published in a recent issue of \u201cThe Journal of Urology.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Three urologists, all affiliated with Kaiser Permanente Northern California, assessed erectile function in a cohort of more than 39,000 men newly diagnosed with high blood pressure. Among this group, the incidence of ED at the outset of the study was 13.9 percent.<\/p>\n

What the Study Found<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Hypertensive men who kept close tabs on their blood pressure and took proactive steps to keep their systolic blood pressure (the higher number in a blood pressure reading, such as 120\/75) at or below 120 were less likely to develop ED. The researchers also noted that tighter blood pressure control was associated with a longer time for the development of ED symptoms.<\/p>\n

Earlier studies, according to WebMD.com<\/a>, showed a strong link between high blood pressure and ED. One of those, which appeared in the \u201cJournal of the American Geriatrics Society,\u201d found that roughly 49 percent of hypertensive men between the ages of 40 and 79 suffered from ED. Yet another study published in \u201cThe Journal of Urology\u201d found that 68 percent of the hypertensive men it assessed had some degree of ED. Among 45 percent of those men, the ED symptoms were severe.<\/p>\n

The association of blood pressure control and its effects on ED risk are clear, so work with your doctor to keep your blood pressure within normal parameters so you can reduce your risk of ED or at least minimize its severity.<\/p>\n
