The disease\u2019s third stage may well be asymptomatic but leads eventually to a fourth stage in which syphilis causes serious damage to the brain, eyes, heart, and\/or nerves. Trichomoniasis:<\/strong> Less common in men than women, this STD is caused by a parasite, although it can be successfully treated with antibiotics. If they occur at all, symptoms may include itching, burning, or a penile discharge.<\/p>\n

HIV:<\/strong> Once considered a death sentence, infection with HIV today can be managed with medications that must be taken faithfully for the rest of your life. Failure to keep the virus under control can lead eventually to a diagnosis of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which leaves the body vulnerable to contracting a frightening array of opportunistic infections.<\/p>\n

HPV:<\/strong> A widespread virus, the human papillomavirus usually targets men and women in their late teens or early 20s. The incidence of this virus can be sharply reduced through vaccination of both boys and girls in their subteens. Unlike HIV, the virus is usually much more short-lived. Most who contract the virus clear it naturally from their bodies within a year or two. However, if it persists, as it does in some patients, HPV can lead to potentially life-threatening cancers.<\/p>\n
