New study shows aspirin isn’t just good for heart health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Bayer has long advertised that an aspirin a day can help prevent heart disease, but a new study shows that same aspirin may help seniors hang on to their mental capacity.<\/p>\n

New study shows another benefit to aspirin<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Sahlgrenska Academy, researchers gave women a fourth of an aspirin to prevent heart disease, but the study revealed women taking the aspirin had a slower rate of diminished brain capacity.<\/p>\n

According to Science Daily<\/a>, “At the end of the five year examination period mental capacity had declined among all the women and the portion that suffered from dementia was equally large in the entire group. However, the decline in brain capacity was significantly less and occurred at a slower pace among the women who received acetylsalicylic acid,” says Silke Kern, researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy.<\/p>\n

“Our results indicate that aspirin may protect the brain, at least among women at high risk for a heart attack or stroke. However, we do not know the long-term effects of routine treatment,” she stated.<\/p>\n

Doctors advise against self-medicating<\/strong><\/p>\n

While some seniors may see this new study as a green light to take a daily dose of aspirin, doctors caution against this.<\/p>\n

“We don’t know the long term risks of taking routine aspirin. For examples ulcers and serious bleeds may outweigh the benefits we have seen. More work is needed. We will be following up the women in this study again in five years,” Kern said.<\/p>\n
