The controversial drug was developed to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder, the most common form of female sexual dysfunction. From the start, its failure to launch has been variously attributed to strict government marketing restrictions, its high price, and the absence of a coherent marketing strategy.<\/p>\n

Cindy Is Back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cindy Eckert, then known as Cindy Whitehead, was the woman who as head of Sprout Pharmaceuticals almost single-handedly managed to win government approval for Addyi in the summer of 2015. Almost immediately after that victory, Sprout and Whitehead were snatched up by Valeant Pharmaceuticals for a cool $1 billion. From that point on, the drug seemed to go nowhere. Promising that no woman will pay more than $99 out of pocket for a month\u2019s supply of the drug, she has transformed Addyi.com<\/a>, the drug\u2019s website, into a telemedicine platform where women can consult with a doctor who can prescribe the drug if appropriate.<\/p>\n

Addyi\u2019s nickname of \u201cfemale Viagra\u201d is a misnomer because the female medication works nothing like the little blue pill. Rather than improving blood flow, Addyi purportedly tweaks brain chemistry to increase a woman\u2019s desire for sex.<\/p>\n
